Andy, this is how I added a DRO to the Minor. The DRO is simple type from Arceurotrade. Then I just took a piece of aluminium plate and bored a hole in it to be a slide fit over the spindle assembly. There is a caphead screw out of sight which acts as a locking screw to stop the plate swivelling.
The plate is then useful for hanging clocks off…but you lose the depth stop which I miss very rarely.
I drilled and tapped a hole for a mounting plate in the mill casting to hang the DRO off.
I have a graph somewhere of the the DRO readout plotted against the manual readout off the fine feed, apart from a stiction/backlash problem the graph wanders about all over the place!

I would talk to the guys at ArcEuro about that. If you cut that box open it will let swarf into the motor area inside which probably is not a good thing. You might be bettor off to elongate the cover's mouinting screw holes and slide the whole cover back that 6mm if you can, without opening up gaps for the swarf to go through.

Here's my first newbie question.
Took delivery of my first engineer's lathe (Sieg SC4) p8020004.jpgthis week from arceurotrade. First impressions good BUT some issues coming up on which I need advice.
Quite a lot on the Web about cleaning shipping oil/grease from new machines. Several say that they have found a lot of swarf and other muck left in parts of new SC4s and recommend a lot of opening up and cleaning out.
Judging from the inside of my gear casing where a lot of gunk has been thrown around – some of it undoubtedly metallic dust (see pic), I would certainly do well to check all mechanical components for cleanliness before first use.
Looks fairly straightforward to remove compound and cross slides to check leadscrews, etc – but the apron/carriage is a different matter. Apron obviously contains a lot of mechanism associated with power feeds (confirmed by manual parts diagram), but I'm wary of just undoing bits and pieces as I don't want to end up with a welter of cogs, shafts, springs, etc. which I can't put back together.
Can anyone please advise on dismantling (particularly apron/carriage – but also cross and compound) so that I can get these cleaned out as necessary

Text may say loosen 3 nuts but parts pic shows a threaded spindle as does ARC , their backplates are also threaded. You can also see the cross hole that takes a tommy par, put another bar in one of the three holes in the chuck body and lever them apart.

Thanks for all your replies, although no-one has explained how these things actually work.
#Ian P – not sure if I was allowed to mention brands, but what the heck – it was bought from Arceurotrade. There is no info on their website as to the type.. The part no is 100-061-00500.
#Stuart Bridger – there is no facility to earth the unit. In fact the display unit is supplied with a plastic mounting plate with keyhole slots to slide it in. It is battery operated, so I'm not sure whether an earth is necessary.
#mgnbuk – Looking inside I cant see any light ?!? so I suspect it is magnetic
#Bryan Ceder – I could see the screws when the scale bar is removed and it did not touch or distort anything.
#Dave Halford – absolutely correct. I tightened the screws after I shortened them.
I could vent my spleen about the fact that the documentation provided only described how to use the thing and not how install it. Although it was titled "Digital Scale with Steel Deam Instruction". Your guess is as good as mine as to what that means. Not to mention the four other spelling mistakes. I would have thought any self respecting supplier would proof read with due diligence anything coming from abroad where English is not the native tongue. But that is a digression.

PS New restrictions tonight in Kirklees means I shall have more time for the man cave.

Hi Brian,
When I made my Tool/cutter Grinder, I turned the hole through the tool-holder to 25mm (not 1" ) so I could use an ER 32 collet chuck with a straight 25mm shank, something like this. Since I already had some MT 2 finger collets I also bought one of these, only mine is 25mm outer diameter. So if you can find an ER 32 chuck with 1" outer diameter it should fit a standard Quorn.

Joining in, I’m in the process of recomissioning a KX3 that’s stood for 5-ish years due to life, dead computers, changing jobs and the law of sod. The machine was bought from arceuro about 8 years ago, it went on to near -as-damnit play for itself in the first year with a job engraving room number plates I obtained through a colleague at my then employer. It then was used until a major reorganisation of the garage lead to it being temporarily decommissioned, then it’s PC died when attempted recommissioning, I changed jobs and for a while had no time or energy to sort it. That was about 5 years ago, Since then due to life and a lack of time, it’s sat, becoming more buried in random workshop crap. Then, along came Covid-19 and furlough.
So, I’ve obtained a new PC from my tame IT man. The current challenge is connecting the beast to the PC, following a lot of googling and research I’m going with a UC100 motion controller to (hopefully) make it connect with a USB. If that doesn’t work, it’s plan B. I’ve spent a lot of furlough learning fusion360, so watch this space.

Thanks for your message, Keith.
I wasn't very clear in my last message. The single-pin c-spanner supplied with the indexer is, afaik, a standard ER32 single-pin spanner. At any rate, the one I have fits both standard ER32 collet nuts [approx. 50mm diameter] and the indexer's 54mm diameter nut.
By contrast, the four-pin ER32 spanner I have, bought previously to fit my ER32 collet chuck nut, only fits the standard ER32 collet nut, not the bigger 54mm one on the indexer.
If there is a four pin spanner out there that fits the indexer's nut, I will gladly buy it. I'm almost certain that Arceurotrade don't sell such a spanner.
ETA: Is it possible that a four-pin ER40 spanner would fit the collet nut on the indexer? Since I don't own an ER40 collet chuck [or four-pin ER40 spanner], I'm not in a position to say.

Bill-talk to the lads at ArcEuro, they've got the 4 point spanners for both ER32 and ER40 listed.

Hi John
The Warco machine that i have is an A2F ,Warco no longer sell these,
Chester still do as the 830 VS so you could compare with yours.
They are not all that different mine has an R8 spindle 30 x 8 inch table
i think the motor is 1.5 kw.
I use the hobs that were sold by Arc euro,at the time i started with this
hobbing they had only just started to sell them.Very good cutting tools
its a shame they no longer sell them,i think as the stock run down they
just never got any more ,i think i bought one of the last in around 2015
this 20 DP Myford changewheel size hob is about 50 mm diameter
most of the hobs they sold were around 25 mm dia.
I have under way and for some time a modified version of the hob
relieving attachment that was in MEW 57 page 37 ,some of the
parts here are seen in the photo along with the 20 DP hob as above
shown in the foreground on the left.
This is intended as a part cnc/mechanical endeavour where the cnc
part just provides some automation to the proceedings, there is still
quite a way to go before it is up and running.
I don't hob gears above 1.25 mod / 20dp as i find most of the stuff
i make suits these sizes.

Thank you for the information John. Looking at your milling machine it is obviously much larger and more powerful than mine is. The problem I would have with the standard 2 – 2.5 inch diameter hobs is that I don't have slow enough speeds. Mine does not have back gear and the torque just isn't enough at slow speeds. I think ArcEuro used to do small hobs but i can't find them on the site now.

Ok, I was away from home for a couple of days, and something has happened in between.
It must be clear now that the missing MEW issues had been edited and printed, they just did not make it to the post office. First hint was the post from Mr. Dias Costa, stating that he managed to byi these issues. So I started searching around and found – just to the left side from the Editor's bench! – a line in the imprint with a web address for 'Current and back issues'. : http://www.mags-uk.com. I don't know if this is part of MTM, at least it was never mentioned in this thread. So I went there and could place an order for the two issues I miss, and as the order was accepted I hope I will get them some day.
My thanks goes to Neil, he at least wrote that he could do something also. I suppose this is not necessary now. But this email story he mentioned: I never got an email from MTM – until last Tuesday, 21/7.,when the ball was already rolling here. It came from a Ms. Kate Parkes, email customer services, stating: " I'm sorry to read that you haven't been receiving your magazine. I have arranged for replacement copies to be dispatched, please allow up to 10-14 days for these to arrive within Europe and up to 28 days for the rest of the world."
So it seems that in a couple of days I will mot only have the missing issues, but TWO of them… I just hope there is not a subscriber getting nothing because of that. In case, he can write me…
Here we have a saying: where there is a will, there is a way. But sometimes the will is missing…or working very slowly at least.
Regards,
Hans

Hi Dr_GMJN, I was sure your username rung a bell when you started posting but I couldn't place it, didn't realise it was from PH until I saw the Stuart build thread pop up in recent posts there.
Nice engine build so far, hopefully she'll run like a chipped 330D

.
Re your post on the previous page about indexing, would highly recommend getting both hex and square Stevenson collet blocks from Arceuro, makes jobs like that really easy.
Thanks, yes those blocks look good. Spending money is going to be a bit tight next month unfortunately though!

MC Black 2
@mcblack2
It was NOT the C-spanner.
It was the one here:
**LINK**
Which of the "spigots?" did you remove?
A C-spanner came with the Chuck but it was difficult to undo the nut so I followed the advice from another reader to buy the Ball Bearing nut and the forged spanner
With best wishes and thanks

Hi I to have a warco lathe which I have had for a few years prior to it I had a clark lathe and mill and i purchased a qctp for it, I to discovered your problem using it on the warco what I did was to bore the qctp to accommodate the boss on the top slide I also had to alter the 4 recesses to under the qctp to suit the locating pin, I hope this helps. My qctp was from arceurotrade.
Thanks for the response.
Is yours the piston, or wedge type? I have been advised there is insufficient meat in the wedge type to bore out for the boss. Was the qctp hardened and difficult to machine?

Thanks Andy. I've loked at these but I dont think they will fit my toolpost as is… I have more of an SCTP than a QCTP. I need to unclamp the tool even if I just want to change the angle on the toolpost.

Andy Stopford

These are good, and don't break the bank:
https://www.chronos.ltd.uk/product/new-3-8-sq-shank-clamp-type-parting-tool-with-4-1-2-m-35-hss-chipbreaker-blade/
I think you probably need to get the dedicated holder for them to locate properly. No need to grind the top face of course, which makes life easier.
I recently bought one of these:
https://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Machines-Accessories/Lathe-Accessories/Tool-Posts/Model-000-Parting-Tool-Holder-Horizontal
If you already have, or are thinking of getting, the appropriate QCTP, then I'd thoroughly recommend getting one to go with it.

Glad I could help, yes the 'manual' is a bit useless
and I'm afraid I found SPG difficult to get hold of, no replies to emails or messages left so I accepted I was on my own.
I had a problem where the lower ballrace 'lost' a couple of balls( basically it disintegrated) so I put a set of tapered roller bearings in by machining a mm off each seat and it works fine now.
I found I could source most of the spares I required from Arc Eurotrade, the basic machine is/was the same as their offerings.

My VMC mill doesn't have a spindle lock and the ER collet chuck doesn't have spanner flats, so I had difficulty tightening collets especially at the smaller end of their range. The answer was to swap the closer nut for a ball-bearing version (I got mine from Arc Euro). Reduces the tightening torque dramatically and I can get things more than tight enough just by holding the quill pulley with one hand and the c-spanner with the other. I had planned to grind flats on the chuck but there's no need now.
