      @ega

      Greenwood offered to “wake us from our parting-off nightmare” with their cut down version of an exxisting Sandvik tool; the latter is supported in the conventional way in a shallow groove and is not prone to the weakness identified by Duncan Webster. I tried dowelling mine but still managed to break it and went back to the old faithful GHT rear tool.

      On my larger lathe I have a tangential rear parting tool holder by ISCAR which works well. The insert is retained in such a way that it is pushed into its recess by the cutting force.

        Many thanks to all.

        I have placed an order on RDG Tools for a facing and turning tool, boring tool, radiusing tool and a parting off tool with inserts. Knowing that I will have to occasionally use the bench grinder I am investing in a low lab stool.
