          Hi Richard,
A "Vertical Alignment Jig" could be many different things. I do not have a crystal ball so I cannot tell you what the particular one is for. TIP A link to the URL of the advert would help.

          Les.

            Richard,

I can't say exactly; but it looks like a staking tool of some sort.

My guess is that there would have been a round table mounted on a pin, to fit the longer arm.

            … Looks very adaptable !!

              Les,

This is what I saw when I gazed into my Crystal Ball.

                Hi Michael,
If that is the item that the OP is referring to then it looks like it is an item that has been made in reasonable quantity as it is made from castings. I think your theory about a table being mounted on the longer arm is reasonable. I have not seen an item like this before so I still have no idea if its intended use. I had no intention of searching eBay for it if the OP could not be bothered giving a URL or item number.

                Les.

                  Good Morning All

From the photos it looks like the bulk of a horology staking tool with the lovely box containing all the stakes and accessories missing.

Looks like a King-size version of GHT's Universal Pillar Tool – about twice the size of his design.

Thanks MichaelG for looking it up – like Les I couldn't be bothered if the OP couldn't.

                        Gentlemen

I tried to display the page from ebay on this site but it wouldn't work, what is a URL? the number for the item is 151572271639, and if you look up Vertical Alignment Jig it will be the first item shown, I would much prefer to spend my time in the workshop than fiddling around with a computer.

                          .

                          Well, Richard …

If that's your attitude; please don't expect any more advice from me.

                          I looked-up the item because the description intrigued me, but;

with hindsight, I think Les expressed a more appropriate response.

                          MichaelG.

Whilst I agree that a reference to the item on the original post would have been very useful, I am also aware that many people are not fully conversant with procedures within the forum to know how to post links etc, (Jason kindly helped me when I had the same problem).

To accuse someone of 'not being bothered' is surely a little harsh? especially when the OP has mentioned that he is not familiar with terminology.

Richard, the URL 'Uniform Resource Locator' is just the web address, also known as the link – what appears in the address bar of your web browser when you view a page. So for your ebay item it is this:

                              http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vertical-Alignment-Jig-/151572271639?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item234a695217

You can copy it from your web browser and paste it into the post you're composing. Let me know if you need step by step instructions for this.

It can be made into an active link by using the button which looks like a few links of chain with what is presumably meant to be a globe above it (world wide web), in the editor you use to post on this forum. It is best to just write some text first like

                              Vertical Alignment Jig

Then highlight it (with the mouse – hold left button down and drag over the text, then release) and click that button. Then paste the URL into the box that appears, and click OK, which gives:

                              Vertical Alignment Jig

The reason people are getting upset is that by not giving a link, you are forcing everyone who might be willing to answer your question helpfully to 'mess around with computers' themselves, to work out what it is you are asking about, when they too would rather be doing something more interesting.

Right or wrong, the judgement is that if you can't be bothered to do this little, easy thing to make it easier for people to answer, which it is obvious would be helpful, why should they be helpful and bother tracking down the item and answering?

Well, there you go, I didn't know how to change the *link* text, Thanks Pete.

I understand that Richard has decided to leave the forum.

It may be a surprise that some people don't know what a URL is, but its worth remembering that some user may never have been shown how to cut and paste, let alone copy links into a message.

Please assume lack of knowledge before laziness in such things.
