I think that's for mini-lathes with a 75mm (approx) spindle flange, Jason. Not sure where you'd find one for a 125mm flange (or, more pertinently, the right register diameter to go on such a flange). Arc Euro do one for 100mm and another for 150mm (both for ER32s), but none for 125mm.

They are handy; I have a 100mm one for ER25, and as Stuart says it's useful for holding long stock up to 16mm dia. which needs to pass through the spindle.

Not too hard to roll your own, I suppose, though that would turn a lot of metal into swarf unless fabricated from a large dia. disc and a smaller dia. nosepiece.

I have been considering getting either a small dividing head or rotary table.

One of the options that I think will give the best of both worlds is to purchase a rotary table that comes with or can easily be fitted with a stepper motor, such as for example one of these from Sherline or ArcEurotrade although neither are particularly cheap.

Adding a digital controller such as the DivisionMaster or one of the other designs found on the web will then add a comprehensive dividing capability without resorting to counting holes.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

The problem with your first suggestion Jason B is that I need to hold the drill to drill a hole to hold the drill………..etc!

I like the second idea better, and the micro drill adaptor will be very useful as will the small chuck.

I have ordered from ARC Euro Trade in the past and their service is astounding. On both occasions I placed an order on Thursday night (Eastern Australian Standard Time) and the items were delivered on the following Monday morning to my Melbourne address. And the prices were about 60% of what I would have paid here, even after air freight of about $45 per kilo. And the delivery was quicker than when I ordered from a firm on the other side of Melbourne.

I have a number of pin chucks, and have used them in the past for small drills, but none are concentric and they can only be used with a hand held drill where they centre temselves. A bit too fraught for 25 thou.

There is insufficient clearance for locknuts, but the split nut is a thought. Any comment on that!

I had not planned to file or flatten the wire – I can barely see it, hence the hole twice the diameter, plus it's less fragile.

            Thanks all of you.

But don't try that one in a drill press or mill as the lever will fly round!!

Something like this from ARC would be safer

                John,

Far better than using a lash-up, buy a suitable drill chuck, such as the 0.4-4.0 mm one on this page (first item): **LINK**

Only £12 (plus a few £ for an arbour) and you will be able to use it again and again…

Concentricity is important with tiny drill bits, and this will give you the best chance. Withdraw frequently to clear the flutes, clogging of the flutes is probably the most common cause of breakage at these small sizes.

Just like most people I suppose I only peruse those sections of a supplier’s catalogue that really interest me and/or are relevant to my needs. I hadn’t therefore previously encountered the video included in the High Speed Spindles, Motors & Inverters section of Arceurotrade’s on-line catalogue. On this occasion I did so just by chance.

There followed a good number of viewings of YouTube videos of CNC routers and readings of good number of the posts at the mycncuk .com forum. I wondered whether MEW could cover the subject in some depth in the not too distant future. Those of us who have been subscribers for a few years will , of course, remember the router construction series over three issues in early 2009, nos, 148, 149 & 150 where several of the components were made of wood.

I feel sure that the technology must have advanced a good deal and suppliers become more numerous since, witness for example, the Arceurotrade inventory. My own interest would lie in using such a machine for horological activities, therefore, a machine rigid enough to cut brass would be a pre-requisite.

Is there someone out there who could author a series for MEW with the Editor’s permission of course, in reviewing the current technology, listing suppliers, providing a glossary of terms and abbreviations and, foremost, detailing the construction of a viable machine.

As an aside it doesn’t take a Professor Brian Cox to realize that one of the contributors to mycncuk is a frequent poster here also, could his ancestor have had something to do with ‘The Rocket’ locomotive perhaps? Slightly different spelling though I believe. Perhaps he could identify an author.

Thanks I was looking at their web site a bit earlier may contact them tomorrow to see what they say !. Or I might just wait till I have the machine back together and see what the one's that Arceurotrade do look like, they do one that is bigger than the slides but it may work ok and help keep the dwarf off a bit more. Will keep you posted.

                      Cheers for the suggestions.

I'm looking for someone to try these and report back. I think you can cut some to size.
It does seem to be a bit of a broken record as half the queries on here seem to end up pointing to this company but I can only assume it is because they actually take the trouble to work out what we hobbyists actually need.

Prefer to use the Kurts and the ones from Arc euro now, far better than the old Abwood which have no holding down correction of the moving jaw.

I bought one of these a few years ago and it is excellent.

No doubt other manufacturers make similar vices but I have no experience of them.

Hi I am in the process of rebuilding a Ajax AJT1 milling machine and I am after some bellows to cover the slides, the machine is similar to a Bridgeport just bit larger. I was wondering if anyone can suggest a supplier for these ? I have spoken to arceuro trade who sell a few but they could not help with what I want.

anyone got any other ideas ?

                                    According to MeasuringWorth .com the average UK annual salary in 1947 was slightly under £300. In 2010 it was £23,500. About 28x increase. In late 1946 Garners of Sheffield were offering stocktaking offers in ME;

4" jaw sc chuck – £3.95. From Arceuro today- £70. Garners price today from above – £308

                                    1/2" drill chuck – £1.32. Arc – £13.50. Garners today – £103

                                    31/2" swivelling machine vice -£7.55. Arc – £67. Garners today £589

A universal dividing head without gears was £74.75 in 1946, that's £5830 at today's prices

As I have said several times on this site always return faulty goods to the supplier explaining what is wrong. They will always replace the item or give you your money back as this is their "quality control" system. It stops customers making a fuss and to be convinced that the supplier is a "good "one for doing it.

Having said that we only get what we pay for so if we buy a cheap Far Eastern import we will not get Abwood or Jones and Shipman quality however the item is described.

It would be nice to have a policy statement from the usual suppliers of Far Eastern tools and equipment. So far only Arc Eurotrade have had the courage to do this. So come on you suppliers you want out business so talk to us!

                                        Hi there

Nothing trading standards will do will make a difference.

I bought a vice from Arc Eurotrade and it was extremely accurate and I was very pleased with it.

If people stopped criticising Chinese machinery and spent 5 times the money on quality tooling they would have no need to complain.

                                            Hi All,

I have built the stepper motor driver as per MEW 199-200 for the X axis control of a milling machine, and all works as per the series.

My only problem is that the max revs of the motor is too low for my application.

The max rpm even with the fast button pressed is very, very low, just for ref I am using 8 micro steps which is 1600 steps per rev on the Arc Euro controller.

I am not an electronics expert but would it be possible to change the speed pot (470k) and the fast speed resistor (15k) to increase rpm?

Can anyone please give any advice?

                                            Thanks in advance

Bob, if you read this I am thinking of buying the same vertical slide and making your adaptor plate, did you ever draw up any plans for this? Are you generally satisfied with this or is there anything you would have done differently?

I did think about buying a Sieg vertical slide for an SC3 or SC6 from ArcEuro and perhaps making an adaptor plate for one of these (they do not seem to like the SC4) but got a fairly unhelpful 'They won't fit' response

There is another thread asking about a filing rest – not yet on the importers catalogue. Yes I know you can make one but if importers can sell loads of easy to make tailstock dieholders it shows many people don't. DIY. Now add to the list 5MT to 5C nose adaptors which are only available from Grizzly yet hundreds of lathes just waiting for one.

I wonder whether the importers ever consider trying to source some parts locally. eg the UK does still have sheet metal bashers so although it may not be ecenomical to make a mill or lathe the stand is bulky to transport so could be viable.

Alan, I'm afraid I may be relatively new round here, so let me tell you my first impression, of your hounding responses to Ketan's responses, and yours to mine also, is that you are in fact a trouble maker.

Ketan – I think your responses have been frank and honest, it looks like the balance of opinion sways a long way to satisfied customers. I would consider doing business with yourself and Arc Euro Trade.

It goes a long way that a supplier is prepared to stand here and air their balanced views, ,many forums will not allow a true no holds barred naming/shaming of suppliers at all.

Time to draw a line under this? I'm an engineer and I'd rather just talk engineering?

As I often say when I post here my contributions are few and infrequent, and I do not make mpdel trains etc etc. I use my machines to make full size working parts for running motorcycles of various makes and ages.

I am about to buy a small "hobby" mill to go in my garage with my Myford 254S.

I have looked at numerous machines in the low cost hobby machine sector, from numerous suppliers. Because of my engineering background I am aware of what I am buying and have interrogated anumber of people face to face about their machinery offer.

I can assure you all that my milling machine will be bought from Ketan Swali at ArcEuro. Whenever I have visited him he has been extremely generous with his time and has been totlly open about the limitations of hobby milling machines. I an stunned at the rudeness of some on here towards him, he is in my view honest and open.

I make all the normal disclaimers.

                                                      Steve,
I have found Ketan and others I have spoken to at Arc Euro Trade when I have phoned them most helpful. They are one of the few companies where you get to speak to someone that knows about the products they sell. My only connetion to them is as a satisfied customer.
