Hi I’m derrick and, having now retired, want to resume my hobby of model making and hobby engineering. To this end I’ve just taken possession of a Chester MF42B lathe from a relative who has recently passed away.

But I need to move it to my workshop.

It weighs 180kg, so to move it I’ve removed the tail stock, tool post and carriage, chuck and motor. But I need to remove the milling tool.

Any advice on removing the milling tool please. I cannot find any bolts that clearly locate it. And if I do does it just slide up?

Where it is currently located is in a cramped shed with no room for a beam or engine hoist. Thanks

Is it this one? Looks like head is on a big screw thread, wind it up a bit and look for bolts underneath?

This is essentially the same as a Clarke CL500M.

You can download a manual here https://www.clarkeservice.co.uk/manuals/metal_lathes/CL430_Metal_Lathe_REV_3.pdf

That link may trigger a security warning, but it’s just and expired security certificate and the PDF is clean.

The square slab on top of the headstock (somewhat thinner on the Clarke version) should be held in place by four cap screws (see page 10).

          Neil
