Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could identify this item. I thought maybe something for center punching or marking. Two people have them but have no idea what they are. Cheers.

Nobody seems to know then? The mystery continues.

Is anything rotary or sprung built into it?The right hand end seems to be offset from the main body from the flat on the side near the shiny machined diameter. It might be an internal gauge for sizing bores within a limited range.

What are they made in, stainless steel looks possible and are the through holes threaded or plain?

If that square bit is loose to slide about a little and is magnetis, then its the plunger of a magnetic water valve. The pointy bit goes in a tapered hole to stop the water, when the coil is energised (sits externally around the square bit), the square bit rises and lifts the pointy bit of its seating, allowing the fluid to flow.

It's a tape measure, partially obscured by some lump of metal.

Neil is right, and if you look carefully you can just make out 5m, which stands for 5 metres (its a metric measureing device)

The holes in the body are not threaded. The square part on the end can rotate freely. The pintle like part has a shaft that slides up the main body. No springs to be seen. I guess It does resemble a needle valve of some sort.

3m originally manufactured these but a rival company financed by the Church of England – 5m – remarketed them as "The Vickers Hardness Tester"!

Its not a Vickers Hardness tester, thats a 136* pyramid, Rockwell is a cone. I'm sure I'v seen something similar, but I'm getting too many splinters head scratching. Ian S C

I originally thought a tool for wire fencing, but if that middle shiny part is threaded maybe it's some kind of jack to push things apart and using a pin in the small holes to increase the length of the tool in steps.

I wonder if it's an expandable center for wood turning?

The yellow bit is a 5m tape measure – google is your friend. 30-497 is the clue.
