Does anyone know where I can obtain new belts (metal cutting) for my linisher which I built many years ago from castings. It was supplied by Model Engineering Services who used to supply the Quorn etc..

The belts are 50 x 915 which seems a non standard size.

My worn out belts say Siamet 50×915-9346

        Thanks

        David

          Hi David,

You could always buy the 100 x 914 belts to fit the popular Clarke CS4-6D sander (available in a choice of grades locally from machinemart or from clarketooling.co.uk) and cut them into two belts. I think this would be possible, starting with a Stanly knife and continuing with scissors/shears.

          Andrew.

            David,

I have the same linisher, and have got 915 x 100 belts from Axminster, and cut them in half. It is a simple task to divide the width into two by cutting on the inside using a "Stanley" knife or similar. I made a simple jig to act as a guide. Even if not very neatly cut, they still work. I have found that if heavily scored, the belt wil break apart, but that may depend on the grade of belt. Whether the Axminster belts are strictly "metal cutting" I don't know, but I have found them satisfactory. There may well be other suppliers.

            Regards

            John

For longer term when the ebay item is defunct it is a company called smith and arrow.
It seems to be uncommon to see advertisers makeing a distinction between linisher and plain sanding and also rare to see cloth backed belts on ebay or the big outlets like axminster.

I'd use these Zirconia belts and split them in half …

                  Hi David

Try CSM Abrasives at Newark http://www.abrasivesplus.com. if they don't stock that sizes I believe they make to order.

                    David,

I too have the MES abrasive band machine, one of my most used tools, a real metal shifter. You can get Norton aluminium oxide belts 50 x 1000 (which fit the machine) in various grades from

Someone used to give me hardly used belts 150 x 1220 which I regularly used to split into three. You don't need to cut all the way round with scissors, just make an accurate cut with a stanley blade and then just tear it the rest of the way. The only part that needs cutting is the taped joint.

Many thanks to those who responded. I had thought about splitting a wider belt but assumed it would be too tough.

Thanks for confirmation that is feasible – Glad to see that I am not alone in having an MES Linisher – looks like my answer is bndabrasives (thanks Brian).

What grits do people recommend for which purposes? The range from bnda linked above go from 36 to 320 in zirconium and 40 to 100 in A/oxide (cheaper) both cloth backed but in packs of 12.

It actually works out quite a bit cheaper for me to buy 150mm wide belts and split them into three. I have also bought quite fine belts on a paper backing but it was a PITA to split these as they need to be cut all the way round with scissors. They were quite economical though as they were around 12 – 16" wide if I remember correctly. No idea what machine they were for but Axminster supplied them.

I use 60 or 80 grit to start with then drop down to something like 120 or 150 if I need a finer edge. No reason why you shouldn't finish off with 250 or higher if you want to though.

Try Smith and Arrow, They do 50×915 zircon belts, the 80 grit is £13.95 for a box of 5, free postage.

I use 1" wide al oxide P120 belts on mine and they work well on steel, and even HSS. The life is surprisingly long, except when you jab the corner of big steel bar into one…
