Although over budget I’m seriously considering getting a Turnado.

I have a flange type ER32 chuck but I can’t help thinking to get the most of the Turnado I really need the ER32 Extension also sold by Eccentric Engineering and shown in the video. I’m just wondering how much extra runout I’m likely to get though. Have any of you used an extender or something like it.

Why do you need an extender? Is it because of using a gap bed lathe? That looks quite a pricey accessory, could you not make a fitting to allow the table to sit over the gap? After all you don't need to move the table once set up.

That looks like a project waiting to happen in one form or another. smiley

As soon as you get the tool past right angles to the work you will be smashing your knuckles into the chuck's mounting flange

You could just get an ER32 chuck on a straight 20mm shank and hold in your existing collet chuck with the ability to slide it in and out as needed

If you look at the video you can see the extender is required to get the most of some of the accessories. wink

That limits the size of material that can be passed through the chuck but it is an option I had considered.

My two shop-made ER chucks for use on the Myford are long enough to allow the tool to come right up to the collet without the saddle overhanging the bed.

This might do the trick but even if it did fit my lathe I doubt I could afford it! sad

I looked on ebay, and there were er32 holders up to 140mm long in diameters up to 32mm, also MT 2, 3 and 4. The straight shank would fit in a four jaw independent for fine tuning the runout, and be adjustable axially.

I have an internal turning job that I've been pondering (which is why it's still on my TUIT list) and this attachment would probably solve it – but maybe I can come up with something a bit more limited in scope (and much cheaper) using the same tool-holding/guiding idea.

I actually watched this video a while ago and thought it was very interesting – the guy(s) at Eccentric do come up with some different (e.g. not run of the mill) products. I use my Diamond tool holder quite a bit but this would not get used nearly as much in my general work I suspect (I already have a ball-turner). Neat idea, well executed though…

A useful reminder Vic – thanks.

Hi Vic, Another Vic (Victor J) I have an ER32 Straight Shank Collet Chuck unused from Cutwel (Code ER32-100)

I have extended it by 80mm but it has never been used. It could be held in a four jaw Chuck if need be.

If you PM me I can send photos and can arrange delivery ( I have no use now for this Chuck

Whilst I’m often switching between a 3 jaw chuck and a collet chuck I only use a 4 jaw in an emergency because I can’t be bothered with the faff to set it up. Putting a collet chuck in a four jaw may be a valid solution for some but it rather defeats the object for me.

If I decide I have enough use to justify the cost of the Turnado I think I’ll just have to stump up the £75 for an extender. Christmas is on the way. A cheap C20 50L ER32 chuck may be an alternative short term solution though. They have them on eBay for as low as £13 inc.

Thanks for the kind offer Victor J, I’ve sent you a PM.

I bought a cheap one. Replaced by a good one. The bang for the buck was not good!
