Heres one for you boiler testers, ive recently been offered a loco, its a bit shabby but a runner, when i asked the seller if he had a valid boiler cert he said no,but he had the last one,now i dont mean to offend anyone here but the certificate was issued by maxitrack, the only certificates i have ever come across were the blue southern fed ones issued by clubs, now my question is,is maxitrack allowed to test and issue certs,as i said ive never seen one so its making me a bit nervous,i await your answers.

I would imagine Maxitrack would issue a certificate when selling the kit or boiler, so maybe this is what you have. If the loco is a bit shabby that certificate could be a long way from current.

Maxitrax can and do issue boiler certs with a new/second hand loco's that they sell, you can also pay them to perform a boiler test.

This is a Commercial Boiler Test …. so some clubs will accept them (mine does) but some won't.

So … Yes they can test boilers and issue a cert. They have the same validity period as a Fed one.

Members of the Maxitrak Owners Club can have loco tested by Maxitrak. They normally have a boiler testing session in March/April at the Maxitrack factory. MOC is a member of Southern Fed so I would assume now it would be one of the new type certificates.

Note:- The blue certificates were replaced by new one about five years ago, when the boiler test became a two part system, ie Hydraulic test (every 4yrs for copper boilers) and steam test (yearly).

                Regards Luigi

Hi John, If it was me doing the test, I usually like to see at least one previous certificate (preferably the first one if a commercial build) and also drawing / construction details.

Once I've ascertained the heritage of the boiler I would treat the test as an unknown and require the boiler to be removed from the frames and all cladding / insulation / fittings removed.

The test can then be carried out as if 'new' with a full inspection and hydraulic test, this will enable the first set of insurance details (boiler record) to be set up with the necessary logs.

Upon reassembly to the frames the remainder of the test can be carried out (Steam test, safety valve blow off, gauge test and marking, and sight glass blow down if applicable).

Following satisfactory completion of the above a new certificate will be raised,
