While watching a video of the Doxford Works machining big ship parts, I was wondering what They used for layout fluid. It was white and looked like it was put on with a 6" wide house painters brush. Would this be of use for a home shop? Economical or prohibitive? Easily obtained or made from liquid unobtainium? Any one know the formula for this secret sauce?

It might simply have been some sort of quick-drying paint!

I use spray-on light-grey primer as a marking-out colour on castings and hot-rolled surfaces.

Castings are often marked out with spirit white paint because it shows the scribe marks more clearly than blue.

Chalk powder and methanol / water mix in the first machine shop I worked in, not sure if same mix as Doxfords.
