building a bike project that means extending the spokes.

it's a penny farthing type idea.

planning on using two spokes connected but can't get tap to do it.

spokes measure 1.9-1.96mm should get away using 2mm tap and die to retap ends and make connectors?

          U, naughty boy,

you just may getaway with it, perhaps a few may get wasted… Why not make new spokes from something suitable, I know the standard end that attaches to the hub would be diff but what about making the end a hook…..don't think it'd look outa place….I'm sure u can make the hooks small enough (heat) and look identical……those early bikes can be quite ''rustic''……

be nice to see the finished article….Clogs…..

Probably, but you can do the calcs yourself. Don't want less than 50% thread engagement. The pitch will tell you the 100% engagement figure. If .2 mm pitch (can't remember off hand), then you'll need at least 0.1mm engagement. The tapping drill dia will tell you, so if it's less than 1.8mm you should be safe even on bottom tolerance wire.

            Regards

            Richard

              m2 is 1.6mm tapping drill.

so looks like it will work.

Clogs kids want to use some red and gold spokes we have from old project,

will be using old std spokes first whilst getting lengths right.

You should ideally roll the threads on spokes for strength.

This was covered in ME many years ago.

It might help (or not, of course) to remind you that penny-farthing spokes were mostly radial – the tangent idea only came in very late.

And if you wish to be one of the in-crowd in bicycle terms, they are called 'ordinaries'. The bicycles, not the spokes. Because when the 'Safety' came in, the big-wheelers were seen as ordinary.

                    Cheers, Tim

You can get long nipples that are about 1" long. Cut off the hub end of a spoke, drill out half teh length of the nipple and silver solder it to the spoke. Screw the second spoke into the soldered nipple. No need to tap any threads and all male threads can remain rolled.

I think making an ordinary bicycle would be a fascinating subject for a "build thread". yes

Are you going to make a standard one or one of those American contraptions with the small wheel at the front?

over the last twenty to thirty years there have beena number of build articles on a number of different/unusual bicycles/velocipedes, going into great detail on wheel making, from rims, to spokes, hubs. Ian S C
