Is this chuck mounted on a 5C collet?

I noticed this collet mounted chuck on ebay and wondered if the mount is 5C. The chuck is Chinese, obviously, and I recognised the make. It is made by Huhhot Machine Tool, the same make as one of the chucks which we have at the museum. Our one is a 125mm, and the quality is well above the average Chinese one.

Yup. Its a 5C fitting.

Looks just like the San Jin branded one made in Yantai No 2 Machine Tool Accessories Factory that I got mumble-mumble years ago along with a Spindexer.

Was a bargain price but concentricity and general quality is remarkably good. I'm not ashamed to put it in the native 5C spindle on my Smart & Brown 1024 VSL on a regular basis when I don't need collet accuracy and the regular Pratt Bernard precision 3 jaw is too cumbersome.

It looks that way. I have a small 4-jaw on a 5C collet body. It lets me adjust work dead true when using an indexer.

It's not unusual. I have 3-jaw and 4-jaw chucks on 3c collets (or rather, arbors).

I'm butting in here really, but I have two 3 jaw chucks sitting idle that I want to mount on 5c arbors, one is a Burnerd/Myford nose threaded Tru-grip and the other is an ungeared lightweight one with about a 25mm mandrel thread.

I've searched till I'm blue but there seems to be a dearth of 5c blank arbours, I'm quite happy to machine one to suit the chuck thread but the only ones Arc stock are for chucks that take backplates so it seems rather wasteful to use those.

Does anyone know where blank arbors are available?

It may not be of much help, but I purchased quite a bit of 5c stuff from John Moore (Bogstandard/Blogwitch) in his workshop clearance, which included Morse, R8, and Myford to 5c adaptors, all of which he made himself.

I believe he bought his 5c blanks from ARC, as the only source he could find.

If you know him and are still in contact, off the forums, he may be able to advise.

Thanks for the heads up, I am actually quite local to John but never met him and at the time he was selling up (due to illness I think) I was too short of time to visit or buy anything. I will try a DM.

It is a very good price, but not of use to me as the S & B model A uses smaller collets than the 1024. Anyone just needing the arbor would do well to buy it and then sell the chuck for over half the initial outlay.

When I was working we had a few Hardinge lathes with 5c built in to the spindle.

We could fit 3, 4 and 6 jaw chucks but it meant removing the draw tube etc. every time.

We bought a chuck like that and it was very popular with the guys, in fact we had to buy one for each machine to keep everybody happy!

The quality was very good for the price.

R C Machines do 5C backplates and their "flying" wheels are quite good prices too which I know John Bogs bought several of.

I think I came across the RC arbors but they are about twice the price of Ketan's but both suppliers do not have anything smaller than ones with 80mm flanges.

Not sure where their flying wheels come into it.
