Chaps, i've got an Axminster x1?( tilting column version ) mill in the shed.I got it secondhand- i think i paid 200 quid for it ,with some tooling . It's not used much , mainly because the shed's a tip ,and i can't easily get to it… but its a bit naff anyway innit ?

Now, father has just passed away , and he had a Peatol mill ,which looked a bit more meaty than the x1 , though i never really took much notice of it . It was in really good condition though last time i saw it ,and slightly bigger than mine , and was it 600quid he paid for it? So it must be better than mine? I had previously bought him a Unimat 3 lathe and mill attatchment , but he got frustrated with the mill bit as it wasn't true , and he couldn't get it trammed up .He bought a new column for it but then i guess the Peatol came up for sale and he bought that . He made exquisite O gauge size loco's in brass …. grumbled if it was "a thou out " , so it must be accurate ! So which one is the best to keep ,best being toughest strongest … x1 or Peatol ? Or are they both naff…

I can't coment on comparative quality, or robustness; but you may find this page useful in appreciating the Peatol [a.k.a. Taig in some markets]: **LINK**

          .

Edit: the Peatol site is a little sparse … this may be more informative:

Can only comment on my Peatol Micro II Lathe (made in USA), which I purchased back in 1984 (full set of extras/spares). The Mill version came out a few years later and I was tempted, but never purchased.

So in my opinion, if the Mill is as good of a quality as the Lathe, then I would keep the Peatol (have no experience of the X1 quality).

Additionally, spares seem to be obtainable in UK./(U.S brand). Not sure if Peatol are still manufactured to imperial spec or Metric.

            Regards.
