Does anyone have any knowledge of Steinel SV4 vertical milling machines and could help me with this problem please?

A friend has a Steinel SV4 vertical mill purchased from a late club members estate but unfortunately it did not come with a manual so we are guessing at some of the features.

The problem is how do you remove the MT collets from the collet holder?

There is a square (approx 1/2” , 12.7mm) on the top of the quill which may be a drawbar lock and a large flat spanner that fits some approx 2” (50mm) flats on the collet locking nut. Do you hold the square and use the spanner on the flats or is there some way of locking the spindle so you can use the spanner and how much force should be required to undo the collet nut as it’s seems solid at the moment?

      Any ideas please?

          Hello EdH,

I don't know the machine at all, but surely the general principle of rotating one item with respect to the other applies, in which case hold the spindle with one spanner and undo the collet nut with the other in the absence of a spindle lock.

From the name this sounds like a Swiss machine, I would expect there to be a spindle lock of some sort and interlock to prevent operation with it engaged.

Hit the end of the collet spanner with a wooden mallet to get things shifted after first running penetrating oil into the collet nut threads and heating the nut with a hot air gun like a paint stripper.

          Regards

          Brian

            Hi Ed,

Seems you should be able to buy a manual from Lathes.co.uk, that might help. Seems Steinel is now part of müga

May be they could have an old manual.

Thanks for the replies to my request for assistance on the Steinel SV4 mill.

Thor: If we can’t work out how to lock the spindle then investing in a manual might be the answer but it’s a hefty price and in German I suspect.

Brian: My friend can’t reach both the nut on the spindle and the collet at the same time and then hit the spanner with a hammer so I’ll visit next week to give a hand or take photos of him attempting to do this.

As you say there should be a spindle lock on it somewhere as I don’t see an industrial machine would have been acceptable without one if it’s going to take more than one person to change a cutter.

              Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi Edh, Have a look at the links below you may be able to glean some info by making contact with the chaps on the forum or direct to the German company — they were defiantly German origin I actually worked on one for avery brief period around 50 years ago but sorry I don't recall any details and not even sure it was the same model of machine.

                  Thanks for the links JohnF.

We had another go at undoing the collet nut today using more ignorance and a bigger hammer but it won’t budge.

Tried translating what must be technical German but don’t understand what a “specify rod “ is.

                  We’ll keep trying.

                    EdH,

Depending on context and the part in question, "specify rod" is likely to be a literal translation of the original German text. For example, just two synonyms for specify are fix and limit, either of which could make sense in terms of a rod which fixes, or locates another part, or a rod that limits the travel of one part in relation to another. Without having the full text, it's impossible to be "specific" . Pun intended!

A couple more links to the German and (D)english manuals. On the second link scroll down and look for the OneDrive link.

Looking through the manuals in the links provided above, the vertical spindle just appears to have a captive drawbar for the MT3 spindle. Can't see a spindle lock, just flats on the sindle nose. In that regard, it is an almost identical arrangement to my Emco FB2 clone – to remove tools on my machine I use the spanner provided on the spindle nose to hold the spindle & unscrew the drawbar against the nut on the top of the spindle that holds it captive until the taper breaks free. No hammering required. I prefer to tighten my MT2 collets sufficiently to ensure that there is little chance of the tool pulling out in use, so removal can require a reasonable amount of pressure to release.

Given the bearing arrangement shown in the exploded diagram, I would be wary of assaulting the drawbar with a hammer – the ball thrust bearing used to set the main taper roller spindle bearing free play will not appreciate that !

The problem can now be solved I think.

John Hinkley: Your hints on the translation make sense as the “specify rod” turns out to be the “draw bar” which fixes or locates another part, i.e. a collet.

Dick H: The second link leads to an English translation of the manual in two sections, in section one for the horizontal mill there is a diagram and parts list which has a better description of the parts than the vertical mill. The manual for the horizontal mill includes a diagram for the vertical head attachment which has the same internals as the vertical mill.

The two parts I was tracking down turn out to be the “Part 268 Draw bar for vertical milling attachment” and “ Part 269 Nut for loosing the tool”.

So it looks like you hold Part 269 and the large conical nut.

Just to help clear any confusion between the vertical and horizontal part numbers they are V321 = H268 and V322 = H269. The large conical nut has the collet fit inside it.

mgnbuk: We were holding the large conical nut (55mm AF) and trying to undo the drawbar but as the drawbar is only 9mmAF it didn’t seem large enough to take the force. What the above parts list indicates I think is to hold Part 269 and the conical nut. I thought Part 269 was attached to the splines on the spindle but it seems it can't be in this case.

Part 269 is 36mm dia and has 4 slots to take drive pegs. I have a C spanner to fit this size but may make a socket with 4 drive pegs so as not to damage the slots.

                          Thank you for your help.

I will let you know how we get on with this.

We finally got the Steinel mill to release the MT3 collet by using a C spanner on the collet release nut and a good fitting spanner on the 9mm drawbar, both situated on the top of the spindle. It took a bit more force than expected so had probably been tightened a little too enthusiastically. I was worried that the drawbar would break but it held out ok. It was the amount of force required that was causing the uncertainty in what to do.

No large hammers required, that earlier remark was facetious on my part.

I’m glad I have R8 on my mill, undoes without any hassle or force.

Thanks to everyone who replied for your well received advice and information.

Congratulations on getting the collet released!

I have one of these machines, but it has the NMTB 30 taper holders.

Hi does anyone know if parts are still available for the sv4 specifically the spindle and bearing?

I have the option to buy one but the spindle and bearings are missing

                                regards Aaron
