A friend is after building a model of a WW1 tank, does any one know where he could get a set of drawings.

I've suggested he contact Bovington tank musium.

        Any other suggestion ?.

try using google and "WW1 Tank Plans" – Quite a lot of info there unless you want every component dimensioned.

Don't neglect the National Archives at Kew.

At this point I was going to recommend looking at their catalogue web site http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ This holds the descriptions of over 30 million documents held by thousands of archives in the UK. However when I searched for "tank" between the dates 1900 & 1925 it came back with 36,000 hits. An awful lot of water tanks.

Thanks for the information Chaps looks like my friend should find what he wants from your suggestions:- I've passed them on to him.

                    Cheers

Talk to Peter Jackson, he has built a 1:1 scale model.

John I saw it at the National War Memorial WW1 centenial display before Christmas when I visited Wellington, it could have come straight off the battle field.

Just had a silly thought. Buy a 1:72 Airfix model & make it bigger. Their research was occasionally quite good.

                          Regards,

                          Richard.

Not a silly idea at all, more of a brilliant idea.

I have one of the Airfix 'Male' models within arms reach, it is excellent.

I also bought their light tank mk VI, which is cute, but about 5% smaller than scale which confused me for a while!

My Bovington quest is to see their real Mk Vib.

Until going to Bovington last summer I'd never seen any of the WW1 tanks. Before going it's worth reading 'Tanks in the Great War', download here: **LINK**

Page 74 of the PDF file (book page 44) gives size, speed & range of the various tanks. Fantastic book. There are others in the archive that are well worth a read, being 'The Tank Corps' by Major Clough Williams-Ellis MC and 'The Tank in Action' by Capt D G Browne MC. Both are accounts by people who were in the tanks at the time.

                                Regards,

                                Richard.
