Truly magnificent birds, feed on dragonflies, swallows and swifts.

        But you know that already.

Flew back home through Sydney on Saturday and had a few hours to kill – Absolutely blown away by scale of the rivetting on the harbour bridge!

Just in awe of the precision boring of all of those holes on the reinforcing plates, the alignment and then the rivetting as the span crept across the gap.

I'll bet the riveters had severe hearing probs when they'd finished.

Had a few hours at Elvington today and met fellow speed friends it's always a pleasure.
Then while posting this watched an old favourite film again I saw when it first was shown the Iron Maiden another bunch of this time slow speed enthusiasts.
Back in time tomorrow to see a manual machine shop when picking up with my friend his overdrive and gearbox bits for his TR6.
                Oh happy days

A few of the unusual machines today.

Here is a link to a lad who wont give up that was at Elvington.

Not exactly a major project but always end up having the cutting fluid pot moving around to suit space, either on the saddle cross slide or the shelf behind so looked at having 'out of the way' but 'to hand' so to speak… a bit of fence wire & 10 minutes later…

Yesterday, I got around to mounting my new faceplate on the lathe. Originally intended to fit to a Seig SC6 lathe, it was fitted to a chuck backplate (for the same lathe), albeit with a certain amount of modification. All done, I'm today milling the end of the tool slide for my Worden Mk3 T & C grinder with a 15° bevel. Below is a photo of the set-up. If it all goes well, I'll add another photo of the result. If not, I'll still post a photo with an explanation of why it went wrong.

As promised, a photo of the finished bevel.

                        Tool slide end ground

The finish using the side of the end mill didn't come up to standard, so I pressed a Dremel grindstone into service and obtained the finish above, much to the detriment of the grindstone, as you can see! The unacceptable finish with the end mill I put down to lack of rigidity in the toolpost spindle mounting.

I saw it when I was a nipper. Not long after I went to a show of some sort an the 'Maiden' was there – it felt like meeting a film star. Mighty in Strength and Endurance

What was the reason for milling the bevel (which in this case is part of a cone) rather than normal turning?

                              Ian,

I didn't fancy the shock loading which would be inevitable if I'd turned it. I've not used a faceplate before and would have had to try to balance it, too. My lathe's slowest speed is 170rpm and I'd built the toolpost spindle, so I thought I might as well use it! Perhaps I should have added that I rotated the faceplate by hand against the end mill – i.e. the lathe didn't rotate under its own power.

                                Now I understand.

I have used a similar method but on the milling machine. I have made a rotary table that has no drive or gears, I just rotate it by hand done (sometimes set up stops to limit its movement).

On your lathe setup since you used the topslide at the bevel angle there is no need to have the cutter (or the grinding wheel) cutting the whole face so you could just have used the tip of the cutter or the edge of a grinding wheel. That way you are nearer replicating a single point cutter, which if fed across the bevel face would give a better chance of achieving the finish you wanted.

Made a bush for a keyway broach. The bore is 52mm and the keyway is 6mm. I didn't make the wheel, it's too big for my lathe. The two slots are instead of a shim, one is 1.6mm deeper than the other. The holes and ten sides were machined at one setting to make it easy to align the keyway 18 degrees round from a tapped hole when the bush is put in the vice to cut the slots. The holes on the opposite face of the wheel are 36 degrees off from the visible face so the keyway is positioned centrally between tapped holes. The broach from Arceurotrade is my payment for doing the work.

Today I bust an M6 tap in a 'soft' blank 3MT arbour – dur! Just because I'm a tight-wad and wanted to make my own pen turning mandrel.

I had never turned wood until last week when I gave in to a mates six months of badgering, begging and bribing to turn some handles for his shears. They turned out ok and as I make pens from fired rifle cases so I thought – I'll try wood.

Not really "What i did today", but some time ago, I turned the bevel for the Toolslide on my Worden.

Very light cuts, though, with a sharp tool, because of the intermittent cut.

Today has been spent plumbing.  The valve on the toilet was leaking, and a new diaphragm did not cure it, so bought a complete new unit.  Initially that did not want to cut off the flow!  But functions OK, so presumably the thing had not balanced itself properly.  The old Portsmouth ball cocks were much simpler, and easier to fix.

Put about a 1 inch thick bronze floor into my furnace today. Weighed out 15 kg material to do some castings for a loco, put it into the new preheated crucible, turn the furnace on in the meantime getting the molds ready and had breakfast. 30 min later things looked just fine, waited 30 min more and getting ready for the pour and to my dismay the crucible was empty bottom cracked right off, hence the new bronze floor. Will check in the morning what i can do to save my furnace S..t !
