Fixed steady for WM210 lathe

Any users/owners of above mentioned WM210 lathe?

and more specifically fixed steady for it?

These fixed steadies are readily available form many  usual sources and are perfect size match (at 105mm  centre height) for either Emco8  or Prazimat lathe, but…

in the usual Chinese fashion casting is described as made from “metal”

Before I buy one to adapt for my Prazimat, I would like to know whether it is cast iron or aluminium?

(enquiries with sellers were inconclusive/not helpful)

and is it any good at all?

Judging by the weight of the one that came with the Amadeal 210E that I had to review I would say definately cast iron. Give Luke or Hugh a bell at Amadeal as they sell the steadies separately unlike Warco who sell them complete with the lathe They will also confirm the material.

My larger Warco 280 steadies are iron.

I am, being careful because they are either described as “metal” or “aluminium” none mention “cast iron” and all photos look identical.

The similar pattern steady supplied with my Chester 7″ mini lathe is CI as is the larger, similar pattern, item supplied with my Warco GH600.

They work – but I prefer the hinged type (i.e. Myford 7 pattern) for easier access. Both the Chinese items are a bit loosely fitted together, with play in the adjusting screws on the fingers which makes them a bit fiddly to set up, but they do the job.

As fixed steadies for the Smart & Brown model A are so expensive, I bought two Chinese cast iron steadies, a small C shaped one and a bigger hinged one. The bases were cut off and the legs milled and drilled to fit to an aluminium base, at the correct height. With another base they both fit the 12 x 24 Atlas bed. Of course you have to have a mill to do this.

I found some more pictures. The bigger one came with bronze fingers and I made another set with little ball races as shown.

More pictures, the little steady can be bolted either side of the base and the undersides show the nut arrangement for QD attachment with a captive locknut and shaped to go between the bed rails, much better than groping underneath to tighten and remove. I hope it gives a few tips on designs that work.
