Is it normal for furnace floors to be made of bronze? I would have thought that some refactory bricks would be used.

Only when a crucible of molten bronze runs out of the crack and forms a layer of bronze over the refractory

          Thanks Ian & Neil

Ian no idea although food industry comes to mind for some reason. The gent I got (bought) it off scored a number of them he made himself a Router table from one sold the rest 6 in all if I recall. He had large sheets of the plastic I got his off cut as he only had 4 of those.

Neil I have been about, but rarely signed in since moving to South East QLD settling in and setting up has taken up a good deal of time. We have been here now about 10 1/2 months. Rather than prattle on the Blog gives an insight https://woolnwood.wordpress.com/blog/
The other reason is so I get some notifications from this forum again as my subscription is due and I am trying to set up to access my subscriptions off the Tablet we now have. Not impressed with what I went through last night so far grrrrr. Pocket Mags app etc.

Any how here's some photos of the materials.

I fixed my Yashicamat Twin Lens Reflex

The shutter got 'sticky' several years ago, this seems to be pretty much normal for these cameras when they get to about 50 years old!

Sadly the leather/vinyl on the front goes hard and has to be removed, but it was four screws to take off the front plate, and five smaller ones to remove the cover, then unscrew the front lens element to expose the shutter.

The problem is that the grease(only on the shutter button) and oil (on parts of the mechanism) goes thick. I was able to get it going again with carb cleaner, but after it had dried out, sticky again. Flushed it with a more generous dose but by the morning sticky again. Removed an impossibly thin screw to reveal the mechanism by releasing another cover plate and very careful oiling with tiny drops of sewing machine oil and it works again!

All I have to do now is clean the lenses and replace the front element and outer cover and reattach the mechanism. I may even invest £20 in a roll of Velvia* and processing – I fancy trying some long widefield exposures of the night sky.

                Neil

*There's nothing quite as gorgeous as the colour in a medium format Velvia transparency.

Still far too cloudy here, I'm not even sure there is a night sky any more.

And anyway, what's your excuse for playing photography before finishing your Jovilabe?

Neil The shutter on my 1961 Rollieflex 3.5E is still as good as new, including the slow speeds. It want's using too but not at £20 a go. Incidentally one of our club members who does weddings tells me that black and white is the current rave.

Using Film cameras, Neil you are very much on trend, as apparently is black and white photography, although personally colour film has always been my favourite.

In spite of going mainly digital, I still have a few film cameras that get used sometimes and find you need to keep actuating the shutters and mechanisms fairly regularly to help keep them going.

Lenses can also develop (no pun intended) fungus if storage is not correct, bad storage does not do the cameras much good either.

                      Edited for spelling.

Neil, The shutter blades and the diaphragm will get slow and sticky as you say due to oil migration. You have done a first aid and freed the blades but unfortunately there will still be oil in the works. The only real way is a full strip of shutter etc and testing. Oil slows the shutter blades causing speeds to be slow. and oil on the diaphragm will make them hang up and maybe not close correctly. An alternative lub. is Graphite powder which is dry!.

Yes, Mike, I've just unearthed a load of vinyl records, as well as some old 78s which are of historical interest to me. Now I'm looking for something not too expensive to play them on. Any recommendations?

Neil: In the same foraging expedition I unearthed some long-expired Fuji 400 asa 35mm transparency cassettes. Admittedly not the best film, but the one preferred a magazine customer I had. I'm tempted to blow the dust off one of the old film Nikons, but I don't know anyone who has an E6 processing line any more. The one I used to use in Aberdeen shut up shot when the press turned digital.

I'll have to ask my work colleagues (all kids under 50) if they have heard of film cameras and vinyl records. Today it transpired none of them had heard of VisiCalc let alone realised that spreadsheets get their name from bits of paper and used said sheets for real work. No I don't feel old.

I'm having a clear out of tools etc. that I have acquired over the years for projects that never got finished or surplus to present day requirements.

This is a checking instrument I bought at Newby Hall Classic Car auto jumble many years ago any ideas what it was used to check.

My thoughts were to use it with modifications to check parts between centres the gauge moves about an inch on its slide.

                                  Checking Instrument?

I don't think the stickiness was the shutter blades, but in the 'clockwork' as both the B and settings of 1/500 to 1/30 worked fine. I did take great care to keep the oil (which is almost like water) well away from the shutter. I think a full strip would not have gone back together…

I had a Yashica twin lens reflex camera when I was over in Lybia in 1967/8 in the R.A.F. I remember using a pair of binoculars as a 'telephoto lens'. It worked brilliantly!

As for astro-photography, I've not been able to do any for quite a while. Every time things look promising you can bet your house on there being cloud by the time you get set up!!!

Vinyl appears to be mainstream again with supermarkets featuring displays of (remastered?) vinyl LPs.

I play my own LPs (originals) on a 25 year old Kenwood turntable connected to a newish Denon DAB CD mini unit, sounds really good IMHO.

Most of the good older HiFi stuff I've seen recently seems to be on our local tip!

I still have some vinyl that I can't replace but I rehomed most of my collection.

I never chucked out my old vinyl LPs but I now have nothing to play them on. Not all were replaced by CDs and amongst them is some really amazing stuff (or absolute rubbish) from the late 60s and early 70s.

Obviously I will need a "good" turntable. I understand moving coil pick-ups are hard to come-by and a pre-amp may be required (I have not really looked into this recently). Do I want to, I ask myself?

I also still have my small collection of Vinyl's mainly The Moody Blues and from there a variety through to classics.

I say small collection as a mate who is in the music industry (Mastering sound engineer) his Vault as its know houses the equivalent of a double garage.

I also no longer have something to play them on BUT as the stores here are now again selling turntables **LINK**

There is nothing like listening to a record in comparison to a CD so many remakes have been doctored an even added to making them very different.

As for audiophies it was one area I envied to venture into but never did not to say i didn't enjoy doing some repairs on old systems at times.
