      @mick70

      been offered some boxford change gears if they will fit my model c 9" southbend.

      all he knows is they are boxford as that is what box says.

      i can't get to my lathe as it's in storage at back of everything.

      will they fit?

      i know some boxford stuff does and that nose is whit as opposed to imperial.

          I bought a Boxford idler gear for a SB 9A i`m doing up and it fits fine without any altering ,dont know about the rest though as you dont need many gears on the 9A as it has a gear box. This one im doing up now had a few change gears with it and im not sure what they are for as you dont really need them for a 9A. I think they were 20, 30,  40, 50 and 55 tooth.

          On checking up i believe the 9 A only needs 20 and 40  small idler gears, The 40 being used for 4-7 threads per inch.

            I have tried twice to answer this, but the add posting command failed both times.

            Third attempt then. The change wheel gears are all interchangeable between Boxford and Southbend.

              I second Brian W's comment. When I swapped the SB for the Boxford, I kept the change wheels even though I had the Norton Box. They come in handy when you are cutting metric on an imperial lathe and vice versa. You can't have too many. I believe the main difference between the two lathes is the thread angle on the headstock spindle, same pitch and diameter though.

                Hello Speedy,

                I believe the wheels are all to 18DP form and 14.5 degree pressure angle. The difference in nose thread pitch between the two lathes was that Boxford made a Whitworth spindle with 55 degree thread, the Sounthbend of course was to the American standard of 60 degrees UNC. Hardware will engage on each spindle since the thread count is the same, but the mismatch in thread angle will lead to lock up before the chuck registers are engaged and forcing a fit is damaging.

                In pretty much all other respects the Boxford lathe was a clone of the Southbend.

                Brian.

                  There may be one difference that might matter if some one buys a Southbend on the basis that it's the same as a Boxford. I believe the Southbends are about with the spindle running directly in cast iron or plain bearings. I don't think Boxford every did that but am not entirely sure due to a small one I used at school.

                  I did look at a Southbend years ago that definitely ran in cast iron. Like most lathes that do that the chances of finding one with little to no wear is pretty remote really.

                    The south bend 9 inch has a hardened spindle running in cast iron bearings, the wear is taken up by shim removal if needed, mine is a 1936 model and cuts threads beautifully and accurately, it has wear to the whole machine but I still trust it when doing fine cuts, threading and accurate work, this machine has soul ( so my wife says). I have some Boxford gears and they are happy in the lower train, the 3 tumble reverse off the spindle are true Southbend to prevent any undue wear.
