Hi. I'm removing the gearbox from my 1967 long bed Super 7 lathe and returning it to the change wheel system. I need to lengthen the leadscrew. Can anyone please tell me the length of a non gearbox long bed Super 7 leadscrew?

Any suggestions as to how I might lengthen it would also be welcome!

          Hello Otley,

I can't answer your questions but I do have an alternative suggestion.

If you have the Metric quadrant, why not simply use that for the change wheels and leave the gearbox set at 8 tpi?

You will avoid the complications of attaching an extra length to the current leadscrew, figuring out where to put the Woodruff key dimple on the end for change wheel drive and make+fit securely the joining sleeve to extend the l/screw.

It also preserves the gearbox for another user in the future. I don't really see why you would want to return to change wheels by the route you are considering.

          Regards

          Brian

It should be the same length from the tail stock end to the headstock end to the end of the lead screw. It might be useful to add the dog clutch as used on the ML10.

What is the reason for removing the gearbox? Surely a retrograde step?

Many thanks for troubling to reply. The reason for my question is that I have just bought a long bed PCF machine that didn't have a gearbox, so I have fitted the gearbox from my earlier lathe to it. I stupidly forgot to measure the length of the PCF leadscrew before I cut it – I was so anxious about putting a long bed PCF leadscrew in the band saw lest I cut it in the wrong place!

The idea is to make my old lathe sellable as a non gearbox model with a set of change gears.

I now have two two-tone grey-green long bed Super 7s. I was going to paint the grey bits of the new one green and the green bits of the old one grey, but I think the two tones look quite nice..

If you measure the length of the piece you cut off the long bed lead screw and add it to the existing cut-down standard bed lead screw + the width of the cut off saw blade this will give you quite an accurate way of getting the normal length of the short bed lead screw.

The length of the non gear box lead screw is not as critical as that for the gear box versions there is nothing to foul it at the left hand end.
