Assuming they’re genuine (believe it or not, there’s counterfeiting, even within Chinese manufacturing), Sanou chucks are generally fine.

I’ve had a couple, and whilst they’re not Pratt Burnerd or Bison, they’re entirely usable in line with what one pays for them, compared with Pratt Burnerd and Bison.

On my new Optimum 200mm independent 4-jaw chuck, the long and short of it is no bell mouth issues at all, nicely finished and clean but the edges of the jaw slideways on the body (not the jaws themselves) are sharp. There is no sideways movement on the jaws but there is slight lengthwise movement of all four jaws on account of the jaw screws moving about a bit, one more so than the other three, and this affects the ease and speed with which you can centralise the workpiece. I got a 30mm bar dialled in 3″ from the chuck with 0.0003″ runout which I think is pretty good. I think with a top brand it would be quicker and easier as one would expect the jaw screws to be mounted with more stability. So pleased with the purchase at the low price.

Three of the jaw screws have longitudinal movement of about 0.016″ and one has longitudinal movement of about 0.023″. The jaws fit their slideways very nicely and move smoothly.
