My Myford S7's thread indicator's brass pinion is pretty horribly worn – it came from a much older lathe and I suspect that (several) previous owners must have simply left it engaged with the leadscrew throughout its working life.

So I decided to lash out on buying another (secondhand) one. It is perfect in all regards – except it's too short! It is appears identical in all regards, except that it is short by about 1cm.

I thought there was only one thread indicator (1419) for Series 7's. Am I wrong? Or is there something out there with a shorter carriage/leadscrew pitch this one fits?

      cheers, Colin

You are not wrong Colin. Perhaps if it looks Myford, it might be off an ML10? If you put up it's top to bottom measurement someone with an ML10, or indeed any other lathe, may come up with an answer. Just for clarity, the three versions I have measure about 65.3mm to 66.2mm from the top of the oiler ball (uncompressed) to the base of pinion.

Took a few days to post a piccie as Dennis suggested – had to read the instructions!

The Myford thread indicator on the left is 2.5" long and is for a Series 7 Lathe. The one on the right is identical, but only 2.125" long.

Question is, what lathe is the shorter one for?

            cheers, Colin

A shameless bump, I'm afraid, to see if anyone can help me with the identity of this thread indicator? Has anyone seen a 'short' indicator like this before?

No luck so far. But I am doubting that it could be ML10, as I cant see a stud mounting hole on the carriage that would leave this the right way up (the threaded hole in the saddle is below the axis of the leadscrew.

              And apologies for the bump.

              cheers, Colin

will the brass bit swap over?

Yup, the brass gear can certainly be swapped to repair the old one. But think I'd rather find another home for the pretty little 'un rather than dismantle it.

                  cheers, Colin

It sounds as though the shorter unit is abouit the right length for the Drummond M type lathe – often known as the Drummond/Myford. There was a bracket made – possibly by Myford – to fit the 7 series indictaor to the M type, but ME also published a design by "Duplex" for a purpose made indicator for the M type. That was 2 1/32" overall length, but with a flatter top. I don't know if there was ever an "official" index unit for the M type, but I wonder if a prototype escaped from captivity?

More than likely a 'reject' import from a well know company who used to import loads of Myford crap from India.

Two years ago they even had their own stall at harrogate selling all the returns. I picked a leadscrew handwheel up to look at, marked in 100 divisions instead of the correct 125 divisions.
