built my boy a tadpole from the atomic zombie plans.

one for me with underseat steering is on my list of to dos.

planning on second set of cogs halfway along run to large cog which is attached to small cog to get more power to back wheels.

also making shorter crank arms for mine.

hope link works never had luck putting pics up here, and kids are away so cant help.

Roderick, I do love that term "tadpole" for a trike wit two wheels at the front. Two at the front makes sense – a Morgan 3-wheeler goes round corners very well, whereas a Reliant Robin…….well, enough said. Spent today fitting a 5-foot safety flag in the hopes of keeping more conventional road users at bay (I don't want my new cycling helmet tested), adding lights (two at each end to emphasise that it is wider than a bike), and in setting up the gears, which was initially a nightmare, but I now have all eight. I must say that assembly of a machine like this would be well within the capabilities of most ME readers, although anyone with an engineering background, amateur or professional, would be well advised to get the local bike shop to do the job. The standard of fits and tolerances was very good – just had to take a few thou off one of the bushes in the steering.

Well it's been a really sunny day here in mid west wales. SO I decided to do a little bit more on my garden wall rather than play trains in Llandudno, watching the yachts and speed boats go by. Now the castle is showered by sunlight and the beer is flowing. Life just does not get any better. 😎. Are you jealous yet?

It's going to pi/- down tomorrow! 😤so back to normal!,,,,

Chain in a tube! That's an interesting idea. Looks fun.

Neil: The concept of chain in plastic tubes had me worried a bit first – thought it would create an unacceptable amount of drag – so I nearly assembled the thing without the tubes. Glad I didn't, because there doesn't seem to be any appreciable amount of drag, and the tubes keeps oil off your trousers as well as keeping muck and grit off the chain. Bear in mind that this machine is intended for light off-road use as well as on the road, and it makes sense.

Patience pays off. 2 days of allowing the penetrating oil to soak in and a grubscrew came out without damage to allen key or socket.

Need to part off 20 brass discs 1mm thick. That will be as much swarf as product – makes me whince but not worth making a smaller tool bit.

After spending a few days in Northern Northumberland taking in the some of the Roman sites along the Wall I moved a little closer to Newcastle so that I had a decent WiFi connection and could upload this photograph of the starter motor I want to change the direction of rotation on. I know John asked me to post some pictures so he could verify that swapping the stator windings over would work. The photo shows the Stator wire running around the lower connection and the armature wire running to the brushes is the upper connection. There are two similar connections at.180 degrees to this.

The question which wires do I swap ?

depends on how you intend to power the motor – can you live with the body connected to one terminal of power supply – if so then probably eaier to unfix the bonding between stator and the body, isulating this and feeding via a thick enough wire to some terminal block thus allowing you to reverse current in stator via a reversing switch

Hi Frances, it looks to me that it might be easier to insulate the brushes by insulating the end cover somehow then cutting and sawing the wires over.

I'm having second thoughts on reversing the rotation of the starter motor. I have a couple of gears that are a 2-1 reduction that I should be able to adapt to reduce the speed and reverse the direction of rotation. I just need some 1/4" alloy plate,1 plain & 1 top hat bearing and some spacers and I should be in business. Hopefully I can get it done in time for a trial run of the engine on Wednesday.

Not bad for £20. Now just to get a lathe that could hold them.

Just completed the cylinder of a Centaur gas engine. The cast iron casting was chilled at both ends and two opposite chilled seams ran from one end to the other. This has tested me and it's a good job I have little hair or I would have torn it out.The 1" boring bar was centered both ends but was flexing over the chilled seams giving an oval bore. The lapping could not remove this and I ended scraping these high spots and grinding them with a rocking motion over a 1" wooden dowell with grinding paste, and then finishing on the lap.Could someone tell me how much smaller the aluminium piston should be,it has cast iron rings.
