It's more of what are you doing this week last Sunday with my club P.E.E.M.S. It ran it's railway at Malton Show while there got an invite to go to Duncombe Park Steam Fare in a 1935 Vauxhall.

Tuesday a young friend with a TR6 sports car which has a cracked cylinder block asked if I would like to go near Cambridge to pick up another block I mentioned Duxford Imperial War Museum so we called there.

Tried to find the spot where I came off the sprint bike in the 1960's but the runway is shorter now due to the M11.

What a sight for people with an interest in aviation it was so enjoyable apart from when you look at the TSR2 and Concorde and how things are now.

Then yesterday a call to remove a stubborn special 5/16 unf countersunk allan screw with a serrated tapered locking face on the TR6 block an easy job for a ME.

Since retiring I wondered how I managed to work on my hobbies and sports when I was at work.

Far too hot to weld the SkyHook parts waiting in the Carport, so what to do instead.

Ah yes thought I, remove the two lower shafts that run along the BH600G lathe bed.

Garage smelt like a winery for a while after the machinations detailed herewith:

                Remove the following;
                1) Feed Rod, to machine the end to take the battery drill innards,
                2) Motor Direction Rod, as I don't think I will be using it as I intend to use a three position DPDT for Forward-Off-Reverse for said drill motor.

Knock out the brass tube from the Feed Rod only, now used to lock the shafts to gearbox outputs. Leadscrew remaining connected.

Remove the bolts and taper alignment pins from the bracket at the Tailstock end, that supports all three rods and heave it and the two rods to the right.

                Now the winery bit.
I have a hip high wine rack against the Garage door and clear of the lathe, but not out the way from some hamfisted pillock as happened when I heaved a little to energetically and the Feed Rod, already pushed out as far as I could, made contact with a bottle and it, the bottle, went crash, tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, followed by the smell of the nice stuff assailing my nostrils.
"Oh bother etc etc" said I.
Luckily not an expensive bottle, otherwise all of Norfolk and Suffolk would have known about it
Paper down and I continued, removed the two rods and then put the end support back, so now ready to decide how to connect battery motor to the Feed Rod.
The wine rack is in the Garage as it doesn't get too hot or cold, in there due to the insulation.

Screwed an LCD swivel wall mount onto the wall above the bench to take my laptop and iPad.

The laptop to record video onto the HDD directly from my Canon camcorder instead of to the MiniTapes. Now need to make a suitable carrier for the computer and iPad.

Practice sewing leather on the Singer sewing machine now that I've got it all up and running at last. It's turned out to have better speed control compared to the Brother domestic machine I have.

Mow the lawn around nine when it's a bit cooler, as my neighbour does.

Geoff – One less bottle to indulge in

Painted the skirting in one of the bed rooms and the hall, having struggled to get the plastic paint guards to keep the paint off the walls made one out of metal a vast improvement. Just hold it in place and slide along as you go and because the edge is sharp it sits close to the wall and skirting, saves having wiggly lines, cutting in is not something I do very well.

I and some of the family headed of to Hawkesbury Model and Hobby show (the one I put up in announcements).

It was our first time there lots of train buffs and some small display of stationary engines. Model RC trucks and some lady friendly spinners weavers and bling making ( that had grand daughter dragging Nana back time and time again).
I met my first member in person off this forum Ian just prior us leaving, he was at the stall were I had scored a book "Steam Engine Projects – from the Young mechanic 1871" cost me $1. I just wish I had snapped up the hard copies of old Model Engineer and MEW also @ $1 each some 30 mags in all.

Show was a bit of a let down from what was advertised could have been the steam guys were all at two other events miles away.

                      Good to meet you Ian.

Spent the afternoon at the local club helping out running the trains for the public, helps keep the subs down as they are asked for a contribution to the clubs funds, not compulsory but 99% are willing to cough up a quid.

Had a good day down at the Guildford show and enjoyed talking IC engines with Ramon and Rod.

Jo has posted a lot of photos of the engines over on MEM forum starting with this post and several more on the next page for those that could not make it or if you are not too far away it may encourage you to visit tomorrow.

Just a bit of an update on my Backplate project. This piece of steel is quite hard but the tip I am using coped well and frankly, the finish is beautiful. The second but last pic of the chuck on the backplate is without any holding bolts, it is a lovely tight fit. Pictures as they say, speak volumes:

Jason thanks for posting the link its more of what I would like to see or have seen at the show we went to yesterday. I'd like to find out where here in Sydney shows like this are.

I do get to see a small display at Hare & Forbes open days this is a machine retailers and a local club puts on an excellent display twice a year. It was through one of their members I scored the Myford ML7.

                                Neil,

The telescope I used for the Saturn picture was home-constructed, but using purchased optics (cheating really). It's a Newtonian reflector on a simple Dobsonian mount. The primary mirror is 22cm in diameter, f/6. If I remember correctly the mirrors were made by David Hinds and other bits supplied by Fullerscopes. It seems Hinds is still in the telescope business but only as a dealer (http://www.dhinds.co.uk).

I promised myself years ago that when I retired I would build a tracking platform for the telescope (something like a D'Autumne platform). Well, it's happened and I really must get on with it…

Been messing with the brown stuff, I'm ashamed to say.

I've fitted the railings since taking the photo, lest I get the urge to fling myself off the landing.

Cedar makes a lovely smell when you work it but not as nice as hot metal and cutting oil obviously! Here in Canada you can get cedar lumber (timber) at reasonable prices and in a good range of sizes.

As ever, Windows knows better than me when I try to rotate the photo…

My local club have managed to lay another 20 yards or so of track and the support walls are now up to the ends of the traverser. This means I can finish the traverser and very soon end up with a continuos loop.

No booty sales for me today but yesterday a number of garage sales in a town near by provided the opportunity of a bit of "harvesting".

First from one "garager" came these all compatible with my Canon EOS 650D:

                                        1 x Canon Ultrasonic 75-300mm zoom lens

                                        1 x Cosina 100mm 1:3.5 macro lens fitted with:

                                        1 x Hama C14 Matched Macro Adaptor

                                        1 x Jessop MC 2x C/AF Tele Convertor

                                        and

1 x Hitachi DZHV1074 HD touch screen camcorder

                                        lenses and camcorder.jpg

Lenses all superb and in "as new" condition, the camcorder new and unused – £40 the lot but the next buy pleased me even more:

A superb motorized MEADE ETX-80AT-TC telescope fitted with AUTOSTAR computerized hand held electronic controller allowing for auto tracking and much more. The controller can store up to 1400 programmable positions in the night sky and the telescopes movement can also be controlled from a PC if preferred

Included is the original nylon back pack complete with User Manual and the two original eyepieces, one 26mm and the other 9.7mm. He thought £40 was reasonable to ask – me to ! blush

I spent a most enjoyable day in the sun at the MSRVS rally at Tewkesbury. A nice gathering of about 40 traction engines and steam lorries in various scales all in steam with some static "work in progress" exhibits too. The club seems blessed with extremely friendly and enthusiastic members who are happy to chat and offer advice, all gratefully received as I am just starting my build of a 4" Little Samson engine. In fact, I was so impressed with the friendly atmosphere that I joined the club!!

For those of us that still like to doodle ideas on paper:
