I’ve just found the pictures of my fix for the first of the five splines I restored. No commentary, the pictures tell the story:-

Those look good. I used silicone baking mats from Amazon, which aren’t concertina’ed but are readily available and cheap.

They look nice. I used a couple of cheap silicone baking mats.

Can you post some pictures of them fitted on the machine?

Nothing special. The bracket for the black cover grips the machine casting so it can be slid up and down.

I’d have preferred both to be black but these were available in the wife’s baking drawer. Just ordered some more in random colours and she doesn’t seem to have noticed.

I have finally got around to replacing the oil v=seal in the Head Top Section, hopefully this will stop the oil leaking down into the spindle and being sprayed out everywhere when in use.

While the top section of the head was in pieces I spent a lot of time reducing the spindle backlash from “quite a bit” down to just 1.5 degrees using a combination of bearings shims, spacer surface grinding and fitting oversized keys as required. The 1.5 degrees that is remaining is from the clearance between the spindle splines and the drive sleeve.

Makes a big difference! It’s not at all reassuring when the head is clattering away like a road drill on heavy cuts…

I finally got around to fitting a digital tachometer to the Beaver spindle, I knew this was going to take a fair bit of work but I had the head in pieces so I went ahead with it not really knowing if it was going to work. The first attempt involved an Inductive sensor reading directly off the teeth of the 63 tooth gear but that was not successful so I then tried a Hall sensor and 8 magnets on the face of the gear, this works absolutely perfectly.

                              Hall sensor and mounting plate.
