Silver steel

Hi all, I need to replace the the countershaft on my Myford ML7 Tri-Leva. A nice piece of 3/4" silver fits a treat. I have allready replaced the bushes and reamed them. Now can I use it as is, or have i got to heat treat it and if so how?

Sliver steel as is will be fine.

Hi Tony, thanks for that. I thought it would be OK, but my son who is an Engineer thought it should be harder.

Hi Yak, to elaborate, you will be in a world of trouble if you try to harden Silver Steel for this application, ie the shaft will bend and you will get scaling on the outside. In industry a shaft like this would be turned oversize, hardened and then ground to size if you really wanted to heat treat it, but as Iv'e said soft state Silver Steel will be fine.

You could use a lower carbon steel than silver steel, 4140 would be more than adiquate, thats proberbly better than for instance, the shaft in the motor on your lathe. Ian S C

You don't need tool steel for a countershaft mild steel would do .I would keep the more expensive silver steel for making tools. Colin
