Best to add an extra paragraph to your guidelines Neil may stop you having to ask for the zip files after embedded ones have already been sent.

          Good idea.

I'll also try and remember to mention it in Ed's Bench.

I've updated the pack and added a 1-page checklist which covers the main points for people who don't want to wade through the ever-growing guidelines!

Anyone want a copy of the 2016 MEW Author Pack should email me [email protected]

One thing you've not mentioned is your preferred image size. I don't know what works for you (for publication) but it would be worth doing what some websites do and specify a long edge pixel size of 1000, 2000 or whatever suits you together with a maximum file size. This may not help tablets users but would be a good guide for desktop users. You need to be specific if you wish to avoid problems.

Maybe outlook will handle PDF better?

The guidance covers this, but the practical advice is simple – ideally send jpegs as they come off the camera; anything else limits our options. These days all cameras use a high enough quality level for our sort of publication.

For example, some photos might have made the cover if they had been sent at original resolution. Giving a number of pixels encourages people to crop of resample, and we may not then have either the space or resolution to do the framing or cropping required to fit the magazine format.

Outlook has no problems with PDFs, but PLEASE don't encourage people to put photos into PDFs or documents! Any change of format almost always results in loss of quality, and most users will use the default settings which inevitable down-sample the images.

I'll start another thread on 'what makes a good image for MEW' – a subject more worthy of discussion – this one really only needed to say: "Apple Mail users, please put your images in a zip folder before sending them to me".

Neil – Out of interest, what software is used once you receive an article along with the photos? Do you use something like InDesign to prepare for print, and then export from InDesign to PDF to send to the printer?

The original resolution from my camera is 4928 x 3264 and can vary from 20 – 25 Mb. I know many folks don't shoot in JPEG as it severely limits post shot manipulation.

This may be of help, although it has been suggested elswhere that other email clients cope much better than outlook.

I chiefly use Word backed up by a small pickup full of various other programs, but the designer lays out InDesign and naturally we send pdf copy to the printers. Bear in mind that I do no layout work at all, I just edit and prepare each article for the designer and send the content to him with my recommendations/requests for anything special to be done.

2,400 x 3,000 pixels, 7Mb, is all you need to do a full page image at 300 dpi.

JPEG on the best quality setting is more than adequate for our needs (we aren't Vogue), although I use RAW for my astrophotography, everything else I shoot is JPEG.

Your missing my point, I think. Your link just tells me I can right click and save, which is fine.

It doesn't solve the two problems of embedded images being downsampled and losing their filenames – neither of which are done by Outlook, but by Apple Mail.

Whatever mail client I use to open the emails, they wouldn't give me back lost resolution or restore abandoned filenames.

The problem is how people SEND me the images not how I read them.

Actually, the BEST ways to send images now appear to be Dropbox and Google Pictures but this must be through a link to view the folder NOT sharing the folder for editing (I won't explain why…) These both allow me to download all the pictures in a zip with original filenames and no practical size limit.
