Bengs kits

Not wishing to hijack and off topic on someone else’s thread;

Has anyone here built on of the Bengs engineering kits and care to tell us what they think of them ?

It looks to be a good kit for the novice builder and two thirds of the price of a similar Stuart kit.

Brian John built a few of theirs but he does not seem to post much these days

Has anybody built Beng’s Danni Steam engine.

 

You could probably build one for less if you bought the barstock, the big advantage of their kits is that it is really just lathe work and drilling as they have done the majority of teh milling for you.

Having the milled parts pre-finished sounds a great help for the lightly equipped, less than confident builder.

Accurate milling has always been an issue for Model Engineers who haven’t the funds or space for a dedicated machine. Witness the many historical add on milling devices from the days when a separate machine was largely beyond affordability. All of which can generally be gotten to work but at the cost of much more demanding skill levels than simple turning.

Personally I’m not in love with the style. Very much “look what I made, isn’t it pretty” rather than the Stuart approach which is much closer to a baby replica of what could have been a full size engine.

But, as ever, the point is in the making and the pleasure of exercising skills to produce a nice job. No showing off afterwards. Although pretty enough to display is nice.

It looks very nice. However Brass and steam do not mix. The steam will leach the Zinc out of the Brass. Compressed air should not be a problem.

They coul be supplying DZR brass and lets face it stuart have been supplying hot brass stamping for their valves for the last 100yrs not to mention Mamod boilers. I would not worry about it unduly. It is mostly the impurities in teh boiling water that cause the problems not the steam.

Also if it was not clear in my first post you do still have to do some milling. “they have done the majority of the milling for you”

Thanks for that link and apologies for not searching the forum first.

From reading that it seems the greatest problem I’d have with the Danni kit is dealing with the stainless steel valve rod. I’m not sure if my Unimat 3 will be capable of that and the challenge of threading the end with a M2 hole. Tricky stuff.

Unimat should have no problem machining 303 Stainless, mine does it.

Steam won’t leach zinc out of brass, but hot water can.
