A German corporate video for a manufacturing company. Skip to 04:30 though and see what the electrician poking around with the screwdriver is up to. Did noone think of cutting this bit out of the video?

Made me laugh, as I've done that many times in my career and since.

They are obviously not scared to show mishaps, or someone was dozing while editing.

Very little obvious H&S getting in the way at the foundry, which makes me wonder if the UK is drowning in it.

            SCHIESE! Das ist leiben!

Been there! and have burnt ended screwdrivers to prove it, and I am, an electrical engineer. The trick is to keep alive! thats why you used to see engineers working on live equipment working with one hand in their pocket. Of course no one works on live equipment any more…………………………………do they?

This actually looks like he forgot to switch off, his hand goes to the isolater pretty quick. I suppose it could have been left in as an attempt at german humour

Many moons ago I was working in the panel of a brake disc grinder which had a fault on it and its was live because I was checking voltages, I stood up to go back to the machine when the was a crack and a blue flash but I couldn't see what had happened until the operator told me I had touched the top of my head against the mains isolator which was stood off of the back panel so it could reach the door, funny thing was I never felt a thing but my brain power increased 100%, not smiley

I read about "Flash Testing" somewhere, that must be what the video guy is doing!

About a week ago I was disassembling an old sewing machine, breaking it down for my scrap bin. I tried the motor, OK, as was the light. Then I got started, so first thing was take the light off, this required cutting the cable (machine unplugged about 1/2 an hour), side cutters, BANG, the suppressor capacitor was holding full voltage, and I'd forgotten to discharge it. No shock, and the side cutters did not get the edges burnt, but a warning just the same.

Have you never tested the EHT of a CRT television set, by drawing off a 3 inch long spark from the 25kV EHT terminal with an earthed screwdriver?

Interesting. And the guy with the long hair is just an accident waiting to happen. I'm surprised he's allowed to wear his hair like that at the plant.

Towards the end of his career, my father was the senior safety manager for one of ICI's divisions (remember ICI – like GEC, it used to be a major UK industry). The German factories were the worst of the European factories when it came to industrial accidents and the electrical accidents stood out in particular, not least when you considered fatalities. It's not what we would expect from our cliched view of the Germans but the numbers spoke for themselves.

It's never going to be possible to get H&S to where everyone is happy with it and there are some silly things going on with some regs but the data for injuries and fatalities has improved over the last few decades so some of it must be working. If you want to see what happens when there is no consistent H&S standards, take a look at some of the videos of Chinese factories and ask yourself if you'd want your offspring working in them!

Oh yes.. like it. I've blown up a few screwdrivers in my time! A colleague did drop his (metal) stanley knife across a 3 phase bus bar when he was working on the Channel Tunnel.

He never found the knife again, he believed it vaporised – according to others he went white as a sheet for hours afterwards…
