I have some building work in progress, and will ultimately need a good [i.e. reasonably weather-proof & secure] box to mount on an outside wall

… any recommended suppliers of such, please ?

British Ironworks Centre in Shrewsbury . They have a good range of free standing plus built in post boxes . I am not computer literate and so found their web site slow to navigate . I bought a fire guard from them some time ago and am very pleased with it . Other than this , no connection to company.

To be fair, their web site does seem a tad unpredictable.

Bit off topic I’m afraid, but mention of the British Iron Works has brought back memories of my visit to their Sculpture Park just outside Oswestry. This is where the “Knife Angel” was made. The sculptures in their park are well worth a visit if you are in the area. You may have to book at busy times. Check out their website for pictures of some of their sculptures.

But will your delivery persons recognise it as they like to take a photo of the parcel near someone’s door? A few weeks ago I had to remove the outside letterbox flap from my front door owing to rusty hinges leaving just the bare slot and an internal flap. Despite writing letterbox on the door with arrows the temporary postie cannot deduce this is the hole for the envelopes and circulars.
Regular postie is off sick but she would do anything to get her job done – pushing past rain laden bushes blocking my path and finding a detour when snow completely blocked normal access, if I was not in leaving registered mail with a friend knowing he would ring me, a real old fashioned village service.

I fear that Bazyle is correct. My son installed a parcel box beside his front door, the delivery people still insisted on leaving the parcels leaning against his front door and not in the box. He eventually place a sign with instructions to lift the lid of the box and to place the parcels inside. Sometimes it works, sometimes they just continue to leave the parcel on the door step. Sometimes the photo isn’t even his door.

It’s pot luck now. I’ve had tiny packages that would easily go through the letter box left in the flower box beside the front door in full view of anyone passing by. They don’t even bother to use the door knocker or ring the bell. As my wife and I are both retired there is usually someone at home. Our usual clue is if we happen to see a van outside or perhaps an e-mail telling us that a delivery has been made! It leaves you lost for words sometimes.

The worst delivery we experienced was when my son arranged for a Macc Studio computer to be delivered to our house as we would be in waiting for it. Apple send their computers to be signed for, but it was just left in the driveway and whoever dropped it off had just disappeared. That was about £5000 worth of computer. Luckily we saw the van as it drove off and quickly retrieved the box. That did get a swift complaint to Apple about their choice of delivery service.

Sorry to go on for so long, this is a subject that I really get wound up over, despite complaints, it does not improve.

Do modern post boxes have spam compartments for junk mail ?
