      Possibly a simple question but trying to find the most accurate way to drill holes. Building a Stuart V10 and experimenting making a crank from solid and so far so good. Procedure suggested to turn the crank pin is to make a fixture from round bar and drill an offset hole to hold the shaft with the pin central. I have various options to drill.I can offset fixture in 4 jaw chuck and hold drill in tailstock. Hold fixture in lathe vertical slide and drill in chuck or use vertical drill. I have collets to hold drill with morse taper adapters which fit all in addition to Jacobs type chuck.

      Any advice appreciated.

          Hamish,

          I would use the lathe & 4-Jaw, drill the hole under-size and bore to final size.

          Edit: … if it's too small to bore with a conventional boring tool; ream to final size, or make a D-bit.

          Do you have a sketch of the proposed jig ?

            10V crankshaft is (IIRC) 9/32" diameter so a bit tricky to bore.

            Sir Harold of Hall has a nice description of this work (I made a built up crankshaft for mine so didn't face this issue). I've used one of these jigs since though, I think I drilled and reamed it in the 4-jaw.

                If you go to the last page on the link provided by Neil, fixture 3 is shown on sheet 3.

                I wondered how I was going to bore such a small hole but will now need to get a reamer.

                Next question, what is a "D" bit?

                    Well, D bit is way out of my capabilities and am sourcing a reamer. Should it be straight or adjustable?

                    My initial posting was not very descriptive in that I was trying to find out which method would give me the straightest roundest hole by alternative means. Will use 4 jaw as suggested.

                    What I also found confusing is the hole in the fixture is shown as 19/64 with a shaft hopefully machined to 5/16???

                      Ideally, I would say a "machine reamer" … which you will probably be O.K. holding in the tailstock drilling chuck.

                        Hi Hamish,

                        Long thread may gave the impression a d-bit is more complex than it actually is.

                        You just need to take just under half of the thickness off of a bar of the right diameter for a distance of about two diameters, then as it isn't for flat-bottomed holes, set the rest on your grinder at ten degrees and angle the d-bit at ten degrees and grind across the end to create the cutting point.

                        If you use silver steel you will need to harden and temper it, but is perfectly possible to grind one from an HHS toolbit (or an HSS drill blank).

                            If you take off over half the thickness it will cut on the side which you don't want. You need to reduce it to just over half the thickness, say 10 thou over, then it will cut true to size. But, yes, it's much easier to do than describe.

                                Another way is to make a tool makers reamer, either HSS, or silver steel. If the hole to be reamed is brass or aluminium, a piece of the shaft that's going to fit the hole may do OK. Cut the slope about 20*.
