      Hi
Can anybody tell me a little about spray coolant systems? I recently bought a surface grinder which has a system attached to the back which looks like the lubricators on an airline system. It has an air line attached (cut off) and what look like oil pipes going to a bracket attached to the bed. I wondered if this was a spray coolant system, or part of one! The grinder is a creep feed Jones & Shipman.
      Thanks

Seems your on the right track in thinking you probably have a spay mist or droplet coolant system. Used mainly as an alternative to flood coolant systems and also as an alternative to white water stinking up your machine if your not using it regularly.

Good explanation of one system here

Thanks Jim. Yes, it looks like a similar system but with smaller containers – about !/2 pint each. There is some sort of unit under the table which is attached to the unit at the back and some extra bits of metal on the front which look as though they were to act as limits or to trigger some action with the movement of the table (not the normal limit stops to alter the direction of of the table). I think some dismantling is in order to see how these bits work !

Nick, are you sure it is not a system to automatically oil the table ways?

Your description seems to be more appropriate to this. The ‘extra bits of metal’ is not what I consider an adequate description from a model engineer, though !

Hi Hansrudolph. No, I don’t think its to oil the tableways as there is provision for this built into the machine as standard.

You are right regarding the “bits of metal” not being an adequate description! I will try a bit harder. The normal bar fitted to the front of the table which carries the stops for reversing the table traverse has been extended all the way to the left of the table. On the left end of the bar is a moveable piece of steel (bit of metal) with a reduced area lying horizontally at the front and a similar piece about 7″ to the right of it. As the table moves these pieces pass through a very heavy bracket which has two holes in the top which I think must have held some piece of equipment activated by the two pieces of steel. I think it might have been for some special operation carried out on the machine but it all looks factory fitted. I’ll have a word with Jones & Shipman.
