I very recently sold my Boxford lathe to make way for a larger unit. The buyer who collected the lathe only this Saturday just gone has kindly sent me a photograph showing the lathe in use. I would never have thought it possible to turn such a large item on this machine but the operator is very happy with the results.

He might only be turning part of the shaft close to the chuck? Dunno if the crossslide would quite pass under the main barrel of the assembly.

It looks like he is skimming a commutator or slip ring without removing it!

Looks like the job is held in a three jaw chuck, so will not be as concentric as being set up in a four jaw.

If looking for that level of accuracy, the far end, in the steady could be clocked and set to run concentric within close limits.

Being the rotor from an electric motor, there will be a comparatively large air gap between the rotor and the pole pieces, so maybe a three jaw is sufficiently accurate, particularly when working close up as inn the photo.

If concentricity is not good enough, the risks are friction from non aligned bearings and out of balance forces.

I did wonder what the part was, all I know is that he is very satisfied with the lathe so I guess it is cutting accurately enough for whatever it is he is doing, thanks for the info chaps.
