I take a lot of video shots of the stars. Not as good as you guys with the Telescopes. But this video is of my latest Moon shots. This is using just a camera.

What a brilliant camera/lens combination Steve.

Looking forward to seeing more of your impressive photography.

            Amazing result, Steve yes

You could try stacking some of that video .. I think you will astonish even yourself.

Very nice. There's a small, funny-shaped double crater with a longish nick at the edge around 3:35 that I'll look up as soon as I get my Moon atlas back – all packed up for house-move at present.

I did something not as good with a camcorder and a fieldscope in the early 90s, but it's on 8mm videotape… blush

              …somewhere…. surprise

I did take a load of stills from the video, as the camera has that feature. Not done anything with them as yet.

                Thanks for the comment.

I tried moon pictures back in the 60's with a Pentacon 500 f5.6 with 2X and 3X teleconverters for 3000mm. The greatest problem was the speed of the moon. My magnification was nowhere near yours with the Nikon. Now you can buy a motorised telescope very cheaply and track the moon so easily. I have a Meade ETX 105 and a 5 mp ccd USB camera which was bought for use with the microscope. I really ought to try them out together.

It would be great if you could do some shots. It would be good to see how much clearer they will be. I have a AZ GTI motorized head fitted, but have struggled so far to get it set up properly. It is handy that at least i can stay away from the camera & operate it from my phone.

                      Hello, Nice video.

Try RegiStax, (free). No need to sort frames as it will find them.

However, takes a bit of getting used to.

                      Good luck.

Used to take a lot of sights for navigation using anything and everything to while away the time at sea but I stopped using the moon because it's a stellar ferrari compared to anything else you look at up there

Well done Steve, I started my astrophotography journey using Nikon bridge cameras. You'll find that video will (as suggested above) stack well. With the P1000 you ought to try videoing (or taking a couple of dozen photos at least) the planets and stacking them. Even my P560 could show saturn's rings.

All taken with a Nikon bridge camera and stacked then combined into one image:

Can someone provide images of before and after photo-stacking of the moon (or any other astronomical subject)?

I'm struggling with DOF and its relationship to the distance ratio of subject to distance of 215:1 (i.e. the moon's distance of 373,586 km divided by half the moon's diameter of 1735 km).

Or am I barking up the wrong ratio tree ?

Should I presume we are not talking about focus stacking?

spent most of yesterday trying to use stacking programs with no success at all. Lack of knowledge i guess. Must try harder. Registax keeps crashing , so i tried a version of AutoStakkert. But still no luck. I need to get my around the program. I watched a few youtubers showing how to do it , but got lost half way through.

As i have said above i am struggling to get my head around the stacker programs. One problem i did have was my video's are in MPG format & the programs want to see AVI. So i converted the MPG to AVI but it still would not accept it.

I also have lots of pictures that were done on a sort of burst mode , so around 10 pictures at a time.

I think i need to do some instruction reading if i can find any.

Michael. I have just had a look at the link. I will try again. I tried registax with 10 pictures yesterday. But the program kept crashing. In the end i gave up. I even switched the computer off to clear any cache, but to no avail. I am going to have another go though. The p.c i have is a pretty powerful octocore with 16gig of ram , so i doubt the problem is with the p.c , but with the user.
