The fact that you need to get a £500 bench/pedestal grinder to get something with subtantial toolrests.

Bench drills that have tilting tables: something I have never used which just gets in the way by occasionally shifting because the fixing got a bit loose.

          A tad off topic:

Neil I used to drag a bowl of hot water over the shag pile and watch fleas leap into it and drown. %^&$**&^%$ cats.

Should have drowned the cats !

The most annoying thing in my workshop is the operator.

I don't like to throw stuff away. So when faced with a boring job, half way through grinding a nice looking boring tool from 5% cobalt HSS I succumbed to laziness and gave the supplied brazed carbide @#*&^$ crap boring tools another go.

Nearly stuffed the job, gave it away just before it was ruined and finished the HSS tool grinding with great results, rescued the work.

We can be our own worst enemy.

The brazed tools now live in the tool cupboard with a note that says "HELLO STUPID, what do you want to ruin today?"

Danny is right, the most annoying thing in my workshop is myself!

You know the moments, when it all goes to rats**t and a lightbulb goes on upstairs reminding you it Fsd up like that the last time you tried it!

I am a slow learner on occasion. Pondering Harrogate show this morning…….

Them jobs you've started but cant be interrupted until done, phone rings PPI or something. One of these days will have heart attack giving them some since not allowed by law to call as a registered with TPS.

I'm registered with TPS too… doesn't work! still get calls re PPI, Pension advisory services, accident claims etc… if these companies use outside UK call centre links, TPS doesn't have any effect…

Ronan, I felt like it at times however if I had I might have to drown the misses as well (Her cats).

On topic: The mini lathe cross slide knuckle peeling allen screws holding the handle and adding salt to the wound it always seems to line up with the handle on the feed screw.angry

I'm going out today priority is domed allen screws.smiley

I have a question which is probably best raised here.

I have an excellent memory for where I have put things. Even things from years ago. However, every now and then it lets me down. When this happens it usually happens catastrophically and I am left totally clueless as to where said thing might be. On one occasion, while doing work for a customer, I lost the chuck key for the lathe. It took over an hour to find. Some time later I realised that I had charged the company that I was working for, for an hour of my time ransacking my workshop.

                    The question is:-

How much money does industry lose each year to lost chuck keys?

If possible I would like to see this broken down into 3 jaw, 4 jaw and drill chucks.

                    Regards David.

Spotting something at a show or auto jumble, and buying it thinking oh good I could probably do with one of them, only to find I already have two at home, which for some reason had remains hidden until the new one was put in the place I keep such things………..

                      I blame the borrowers……

I don't get angry, just terrified, when my cats jump up on the workbench next to a working machine tool just so they can be with me. Or circumvent the sight screens I rig up to do welding. It's nice they want to be with me, but I don't want them hurt.

                          Regards,

Bloody tape measure that disappears the instant I put it down. It's a light gray colour and blends into the concrete floor, grey benchtops and so on. I see why the new tape measures have a bright fluro green or orange plastic housing. But I like my old one with inches and mm on it. Besides, it isn't worn out yet. Because I can never find the bloody thing to use it.

The hands on that clock face turning way too quick and the guilt when needing a flashlight to make my way back to the house from the workshop, such is the hour.

How many of us have done an all nighter? Been so engrossed in a machining process and so keen to finish it in one session?!

I lost it about 3 years ago and spent 2 hours searching for it then finding something new which would fit into my boring bar grubscrew

I use two pairs of glasses now and a few weeks back I swapped specs to work close-up on the lathe. When I finished I turned around to swap back and couldn't find my other pair anywhere. I looked everywhere (I thought). Then straightening up from looking around the floor, there they were! My glasses, in their black case had fallen off the steel cabinet I put them on and stuck to a magnet on the side of the cabinet.

Why is it when you have a bad back you tend to drop things more?

Me too. A lot of phones now come with "anonymous call barring". I have a Gigaset phone which I bought from Argos for something like £30. It was a Which? best buy, made in Germany(?) and has all the latest features (colour screen, text, voicemail, caller display etc). It has eliminated all of those anonymous, computer dialled calls.

Most ISP / telephone companies also allow you to block specific numbers / last caller number if you get a call from someone you don't want to hear from again who isn't anonymous. I've used Talktalk and Zen who both offer this for free if you can be bothered to find out how to do it..

The TPS (phone) and MPS (mail) are a failure. Not helped by the fact that the Royal Mail are taking money to short cut the MPS scheme and deliver spam directly to your letter box, which makes a joke of the MPS scheme. Lucky that technology has come to the rescue to tackle nuisance calls, although it galls me to see people paying up to £100 a time for special boxes to weed out spam calls when phones like the Gigaset (and others) do it for free.

                                      Murray

PS – in fact, checking my Talktalk account just now, I see they are offering anonymous call barring for free. You just have to log in and turn it on. I expect that's true for may of the telecom / ISP companies now, so worth checking if yours offers the same. Save throwing money at a pointless, expensive "box" or replacing your existing handsets.

                                        Murray,

I printed out a polite notice and attached to my front door. So far have had no spam mail though the letterbox from the mailman. It has a bright red back ground with white writing. The local council sent out something similar to this a while back for the purpose of reducing SPAM.

                                            Martyn,

I assume that you are referring to the old din standard backplate that Chester have fitted on the DB10 lathe (seig super C6) for the 5" chuck. If so pre machined backplates are available from ArcEuroTrade – as are most backplates. Quite why Chester don't stock them is beyond me – bad business practice at the very least – but that's their decision.
