Two factor Authentication and Ruralism

This is a mobile signal desert..unless I cross two fields and climb the hill or drive into town.Therefore a few years ago I bought a decent phone with a cheap pay as you go deal (1p mobile) which does all i need.. WhatsAp at home and an emergency phone when out and a phone link to my car (remote locking condiioning etc).

None of the networks will activate this particular model for WiFi calling so it looks like I'm going to have to buy a third phone with WiFi calling on a monthly contract just to keep plugged in at home for wife and I to use when doing any internet purchases or banking as a shared option between us.

Why the heck they couldn't just have used an email option in the new rules…..?

Why not look at getting a Skype phone number? Not sure what the cost is.

You then answer the call on your PC/Laptop/Tablet etc

That may/may not work since numbers aren't mobile type. I cant find the extra fee for being able to use it for MSM either.

We use a mobile signal receiver/repeater for our wi-fi as the terrestrial internet is too slow to be of any use, costs £22 per month for unlimited downloads.

May be worth looking at the coverage maps for your area and if there is a chance of a signal borrow a phone that takes a signal from that provider to see if you can find a hot spot to place the receiver. The signal here on 3 is marginal but the receiver does a great job most of the time.

The ridiculous thing is that we are less than 8 miles from Worcester city centre.

My building society lets you pick from a list of registered numbers for two factor each time it is needed, so I can use the landline when at home. Which is just one of the reasons I barely use the bank I am also a customer of, as they insist on using a text message system.

Nationwide allows the use of either a text message to whichever phone is registered, or the use of a card-reader device which looks like a calculator but which can read your bank card and on entering the correct pin gives an 8 digit code which can than be transmitted via the internet.

Bit of a bind having to do this everytime I logon to internet banking, and occasionally thereafter, but I suppose if it increases security then so be it, although I can't help thinking that this more for the bank's security than mine.

As I understand – It's euro legislation – all online purchases with credit/debit cards will need this. Should have come in earlier but was delayed by C-19

I have a Cisco Signal Box https://ee.co.uk/help/help-new/general/signal-box/improve-your-signal-at-home-using-signal-box which enables me to use my mobile indoors. It is 3G, but there may be other versions available for other 'G's.

How about WiFi Calling via your internet connection?

Most reasonably modern phones are up for it but not all cellular networks enable the feature. I imagine two factor ID may push them all into offering it.

Allegedly seamless so you don't know which way the call is going.

Some banks (NatWest is one) use a SMS to a mobile as a second confirmation. That just doesn't work for me. It means I have to go and lurk in a car park in the nearest town and use my 3G phone as both hotspot and to receive the SMS. I'm sure the spotty 17 year olds who dream up these nonsenses haven't understood how limited mobile phone network coverage is outside the urban jungle. Perhaps they don't think our business is worth worrying about.

I've changed my day to day banking to Lloyds, who use a better system which works over a land line by voice messaging, and stays away from SMS complelely. In my rural backwater this works quite well.

All remote purchases are going that way. As stated in my OP via WiFi is the easiest solution. WhatsAp will work on virtually any phone recent enough to still function and should be an option. Otherwise I also have had to drive to a reception area and call wife at home when we need to deal with assorted online investments and banks.

I make too many mistakes on phone keyboards and no current laptop (3 PC's but I'm not carting those and inverters around). I could tether to my Tesla's big screen but I really don't need to clog that up with with cookies and nonsense which it'd probably reject anyway..

Yet another ill-conceived beaurocracy that could have been avoided with a little more thought

Paypal allows you to connect a 2FA app in place of the PSD2 OTP text. You can either have the app on your phone, or you can get apps for your PC.

I used to use a Chrome extension for 2FA before I had a smartphone

I had the same problem I got a second phone to use in Wales where my main main had no service,I too used 1p mobile and this didn't have WiFi calling so I switched to EE and WiFi calling worked now I know there must be a technical reason as to why one worked and the other didn't as 1p mobile is EE.

As I understand it all the mobile carrier networks have WiFi calling capability for any mobile phone modern enough to have the "app" embedded in the operating system (all iPhones 5c and later, not sure about Android). There are specific apps for some older ones on some carriers.

Many of the virtual mobile networks piggybacking on the main carrier systems choose not to enable the WiFi calling. I use GiffGaff which doesn't, neither do 1p and a fair few others.

Can't see no WiFi calling being the norm for much longer. Probably only the uber cheap, very basic, providers won't have it.
