Does anyone know what this tool is? It appears to be a very fine grindstone, but for what job particularly?
James
Are you sure it is not made of Carbon? If it is, it’s possibly a marver for use by those shaping melted glass items.
It could be carbon: it seems quite soft. Is there a simple way to confirm whether it is carbon?
I shall look up marvers as I have not come across these.
It looks similar to one of these “Carborundum” sharpening stones; does it say that in those letters around the brass ferule? (I can only see the CA & M)

Knife & Tool Sharpening Stone with Handle ~ Fine
Bill
Sharpening stone (depending on size) for scythe, sickle, sword, or large knife.
Point Five on the display card:
Stops every housewife…
From what, one wonders.
This specimen looks as if hardly used, or was perhaps used in a kitchen so kept clean; so still perfectly serviceable.
