simat 101 backgear

Can anyone tell me how to make the backgear on this lathe do more then lock the spindle up and what is the thread on the spindle the one that holds the chuck on?

Hi Brian,

If you look at one of the centre pulleys on the headstock, there is a small grub screw, loosen this with an allen key and then engage the backgear by bringing the lever and gears forward towards you. This will give you a 4:1 reduction ratio on any speed depending on the pulleys used. Remember to tighten the grub screw back up though when you have finished using the back gear!

And don't forget a spot of oil on the pulley/spindle interface to avoid problems, especially if you are going to do a lot of backgear work.

Hi Brian,

the spindle nose thread on mine is M14x1.5, but my one may not be an original spindle.

When using backgear, I completely remove the grub screw, place a few drips of oil down the hole, then use the grub screw to block up the hole again and keep the oil in (but don't do it up tight as that will lock the pulley to the shaft).

Can any Simat 101 or flexispeed owners point me in the direction of a tailstock drill chuck arbour please.

My Flexispeed Meteor II has a 1/2" BSF spindle thread. I cannot help with the tailstock drill chuck arbour, though. The shortened 0 morse fittings seem to be like gold dust.

Tailstock chuck arbor from EBay. 0 morse taper but will probably need shorting. Might need to undercut the arbor thread to screw drill chuck fully on. Cowells do a replacement headstock mandrel for their lathe (M14 X 1) but I am not sure how compatable it is with a Simat.

Sadly, these lathes use the small end of the 0MT, so the arbor thread is the bit you throw away
