THE Show for Model Engineers

The Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition returns to the Warwickshire Event Centre from Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th October, bringing together the very best of the hobby for four days of inspiration, expertise and engineering excellence.

Recognised as the UK’s largest event of its kind, the exhibition will feature nearly 40 leading specialist trade suppliers, offering everything model engineers need—from tools, machinery and materials to components and expert advice.

At the heart of the show are the models themselves. Visitors can enjoy hundreds of exhibits across 32 competition and display classes, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and a wide range of engineering disciplines.

More than 30 clubs and societies will also be in attendance, presenting their own displays and providing opportunities to connect with fellow enthusiasts. Outdoor attractions, including visiting steam engines, add to the experience.

A programme of live demonstrations, workshops and talks will be announced in the coming months, offering further opportunities to learn and develop new skills.

Whether you’re a seasoned model engineer or simply curious about the hobby, this is a key date in the calendar.

The Gauge ‘3’ Society will be there and (all being well) I shall be there annoying anyone passing by our stand on Saturday.

I go mostly for the Bacon Baps of course but my wife is also very keen that I do so, as she meets her friend in the car park and the two Ladies go off for the day and have an expensive lunch somewhere. There is a built-in wifely assumption (normally correct) that I will be making some purchases whilst at the show and naturally a “fair balance of expenditure” must be maintaine!

In short it costs me twice over to attend. However, matrimonial harmony is maintained and we both have an enjoyable day out.

I’ll be there…. All booked in.

Will be on the Edinburgh Society stand, I think this is the first time we have had a stand since Harrogate… Don’t think the club ever did Doncaster.

Still got to get the loco from the workroom, out the front door and into the trailer….. Big, heavy, awkward…. and delicate…. Wish me luck.

3D Printing for Working Models – Neil Wyatt
Friday 16th October at 2.00pm
Editor of Model Engineer & Workshop and author of 3D Printing for Model Engineers, Neil is an enthusiastic champion of 3D printing. He will be sharing practical approaches to using 3D printing to make working mechanisms, from sprung buffers and suspension to working differentials and tank tracks. He also has some special tips to get the best quality out of your printer.

Discover 3D Printing – Adrian Johnstone
Saturday 17th October at 10.30am
Through the Gauge 1 3D Circle, Adrian has collaborated with many other model engineers to push the boundaries and explore what is possible in using 3D printing to make practical working models. Join him to learn how you can make the most of this new technology in your workshop.

Experiments in Model Steam Locomotive Design – Roger Froud
Thursday 15th October at 12.00pm
Roger’s experimental work to improve the functioning of parts such as pistons, valves and injectors is truly remarkable and his talk offers real insight into ways to improve the running of your models.

Foundrywork – Noel Shelley
Thursday 15th October at 2.00pm and Friday 16th October at 12.00pm
Noel’s popular and entertaining talks are illustrated by a host of real-world examples and you can get to see the real equipment he uses – flasks, moulds, patterns etc. This talk is an excellent starting place for anyone wanting to try casting in their own workshop.

Get Started in Model Engineering – Society of Model and Experimental Engineers
Saturday 17th October at 12.00pm
Over 125 years old, the SMEE was founded by Percival Marshall the same year as he established the Model Engineer magazine. Come and hear a variety of voices explain how they got started in the hobby, and how they chose equipment and subjects to suit their space and budgets.

History of Brazing and its Principles – Shaun Meakin, CuP Alloys
Sunday 18th October at 10.30am
Shaun literally ‘wrote the book’ on brazing and soldering. Come to this talk if you want to learn how to succeed in one of the defining skills for model engineers – bonding in ways that create joints stronger than the parent metals.

I built a CNC Mill. This is what I did next: – Dave Sanderson, Stevenson Trophy Winner 2025
Saturday 17th October at 2.00pm
Following the completion of a small, sturdy CNC mill, Dave Sanderson has started to put the machine to work in the precision machining field of watchmaking.   This talk will run through some of the challenges and techniques Dave has used to make cases and dials in his ongoing project to build a complete watch.

Travels in Model Engineering – John Arrowsmith
Friday 16th October at 10.30am
As well as visiting events across the UK, John Arrowsmith has been to many and varied places across Europe in search of the wonders of model and full-size engineering. Join him as he shares some of the incredible models and prototypes he’s seen on his travels.
