Would Slideway Oil ISO 46 be best for my locomotive moving parts. I’m in the process of putting the boiler back on the locomotive having had it checked over. I will be running the engine for the first time and so I would like to use the correct oil for it. Also what grade of steam oil should I use, 1000 or 460. It’s a 5in gauge locomotive I will be running. Thanks.

I would not use slideway oil on the moving parts, my choice would be an ISO 68 mineral oil, or a multi grade mineral oil of 20/50 or 15/40 as used in older cars etc. Do not use an expensive modern oil of the synthetic type. As for steam oil – is the loco superheated ? Noel.

Thanks for the reply. The loco is superheated.

Steam oils are normally sold by model-engineering stockists as for superheated or wet steam, so buy accordingly.

Don’t worry about its grade by number. You won’t have much choice – just superheated / non-superheated.
