Does anyone know of a good source for large nylon blocks, I am trying to make several swaggering blocks to bend various shapes in brass copper and stainless. The best I have managed to come up with are only 25-30mm thick and bend too easily.

      thanks

Have you thought of wood instead of plastic to make formers. I recently used a piece of sapele for a pattern which was tough and resilient.

Wood seems to be the material of choice, use a good hardwood even glued up pallet wood

David, many thanks for the response, I had not tried hardwoods as they seemed too expensive at the time (during lockdown) however I will give it a try now things are more normal.

Bernard, many thanks, I wish I had thought of that during lockdown😁😂

Any commercial stockholder should stock thicker sheets, such as EDPlastics:

Nylon plate up to 100mm thick.

However, plastic is the wrong material. Wood or metal would be a better choice, especially for stainless steel.

Used on the end grain like a wooden mallet

Andrew, I spoke to EDP and although nylon 66 is more durable the cost of making the swageing block in hardwood (pallet blocks) is without doubt the most suitable solution and allows me to make mistakes.

I expected that nylon would be significantly more expensive, but thought I'd let you decide. smile

I make my formers out of hot rolled steel, but I normally form red hot, like the flanges on this spectacle plate from 3mm sheet:
