I am just wondering why there are dating adverts on the forum web page.

As I have said before there is a certain amount of targeting and aiming adverts based on individual users web activity.

So I, aged 79, have been targeted by a Brazilian dating agency offering spouses up to 60. Should I be flattered?

          I guess AI is involved.

I think AI would probably make a better job of it. What you are experiencing is merely the use of cookies which have been around for many years, and which are commonly used to target advertising based on websites you have visited in the past.

But I have never visited that web site or any dating site!

Passive aggressive ‘blaming and shaming’ of those who find these adverts offensive is a shitty tactic.

Doesn’t have to be that website, or necessarily a dating site specifically – which is why I think AI would have made a better match. Cookies are a bit shotgun-like in their approach. For example, searching for iron tablets could get you adverts for girders.

No doubt AI will make more inroads into what we see in the future, but I think it’s a bit too costly for most advertisers at the moment.

As Grindstone says it is the way it works.

Noticed this add started showing up over the last few days. No doubt as we have been discussing Chronos

                    closing

I have also noticed ads start appering here after I have been searching for similar items. Others may not see the ads that I get served that is why I have not seen dating apps recently but no doubt after typing this it will think that is what I’m after.

There is no shame in being targeted and I’m not blaming people. AI, Google etc will have worked out that there is a large percentage of senior gentlemen who frequent the site, some of whom may be lonely. Does not mean you have been searching for someone to date. Just like the current mag carrying an ad for Stiltz lifts, they are targeting a demograph.

Well that “free” jewellery site in the advert is a scam. Weird descriptions like “Emerald Gold” with no sizes, weights, gold purity. So they can send just about anything. Appears to be based in the USA so even if they send some tat to you you will be paying duty on the inflated value not “free”.

                      Very poor.

                      Robert.

Or you could do as I do and that is totally ignore all adds on any site even if they are relevant. If I want something I will search for it.

So advertisers you are wasting your money.

They may be wasting their, or rather their customers’, money from their point of view but at least they are paying to keep the show on the road despite being so damn’ irritating.
