20220328_172938.jpgSo the motor on my milling machine table feed is dead. I've got another motor but the fittings are different. I intend to make a plate which will interface between the mill and the motor. I presume the motor mount will be to a standard which I can reference to get the dimensions? Can anyone help point me in the right direction? Cheers 20220328_172739.jpg

Colin, Look for Brook Crompton Motors and have a look at their catalogue, which lists all current specs, or ABB will probably show the dims in their catalogue, you motor plate should show the frame size you have, I cannot make it out from the picture.

Is the motor really dead, or has the capacitor (if single phase) gone, or some other fault? Induction motors themselves almost never "die" uness it emitted a lot of loud brown smelly smoke.

The motor plate shows Y and Δ voltages so there will be no capacitor.

Photo is not clear but I think it may state IEC71 frame size. Google the full code and you'll find tables showing the standard dimensions.

                  Metric motor flange dimensions

Above link gives dimesnisons of standard metric motor mounting flanges.

It really is dead because I killed it trying to rewire it to delta!!

Get a motor repair shop to fix your mistake(s)? What happened? Is it really dead or just connected up wrongly?

For an interface plate, it is not the bolt holes that are particularly important – it is the spigots that actually centre the motor/plate to the machine.

If the "mistake" is the same one I made trying to do the same thing on a similar size motor (415V only 3 phase FB2 clone spindle motor), then the "fix" is a rewind !

The winding wire is very fine on this size motor and, despite being careful, trying to dig out and separate the star point one of the wires broke off flush where it vanished into the varnished winding – rather "game over" at that point.

I had it rewound rather than replace it as IIRC there is something non-standard about the FB2 motor – undersize shaft maybe.

Sod's Law says that the replacement motor bolt holes will partially coincide with the existing tappings!

This will necessitate re orienting the new motor, if possible, to separate the motor fixing holes in the adaptor plate, from the csk holes fixing it to the machine.

It might be, as already suggested, better to get the existing motor rewound, (partially of fully ) so that coils are wired in delta!

When I was digging out the star point the wires just all gave way and broke down. I'm actually looking forward to trying to repurpose the other motor. I did have a quick word with a motor rewind shop and it's going to be too expensive. If it all goes wrong I'll get one of those unit's that sort of hang off the leadscrew.
