I have to drill a small hole. 3/32 in fact. Trouble is I have to put the drill through another larger hole to access the place where I need to drill and the drill bit isn't long enough.

        Are there longer drills??

You can buy long series drills. depends what you define as 'long'

you might be beter off with a length of steel that will go through the first hole, drill a hole in the end of it and stick your drill in with loctite.

          bingo, instant long drill.

Yes you can get "long series" drills, "Extra long series" and then there are " Aircraft extension " drills which would be 12" long even at your 3/32" dia.

Is this for your valve rod guide at the opposite end of teh valve chest?

If you don't have one you may also want to get a long series centre drill at the same time so the 3/32" one gets a good start

              Hi Wolfie

Yes you can get long series drills – for example here. As you can see they are not cheap!

One trick I have used, dependant on the diameter of the larger hole you need to get through, is to make up a drill extension. Take a piece of round bar which will go through your access hole. put in the lathe, centre it accurately and drill a hole to take your smaller drill. Locktite your drill bit into this and hey presto! ( I've used this method successfully with a centre drill stuck into a piece of silver steel passed through the gland end of a steam chest to start a hole for the remote end for the end of the valve rod.

              Cheers

              Norman

Ah! Advice in triplicate I see!

                Hi Wolfie,

Yes you can buy long series drills from good tool suppliers. Arc do metric ones. Try Tracy tools for imperial one.

                  Wolfie,

                  Also try looking at http://www.drill-service.co.uk/Product.asp?Parent=020140080000&Tool=328

                  A site well worth bookmarking.

PS – the ability to put a short word in place of a URL seems to have disappeared, on my PC at least. One of several oddities in the new forum sortware?

A drill can be soft soldered (sweated) into a mild steel rod to extend it. Just drill a hole about five diameters deep with a standard drill, clean the drill shank with emery cloth, make sure there is no oil on the parts, and ,using Bakers fluid flux, tin both parts.Heat both parts with a blowtorch and twist together to ensure complete coverage of solder. This joint is strong enough for any drill that you are likely to use and can be used on taps too; also it is easy to dismantle. Colin

Just highlight the word you want for the link , click on the little blue symbol in the bottom row and type ( or paste) URL in the box that pops up.

Try typing the short word first, highlight it and then hit the link icon.

                          Hi David and Sid,

I've found that I could not do this from FF. It just linked back to the ME site. I am using IE9 for this test. Lets see if this works

                          TEST

It should go to Arc Euro's website. It took me back to the ME website.

I just edited the link and re inserted the URL. The link just contained the hash character. That now seems to work.

                          Les.

                                Wolfie,

On the RDG website you will see a set of long series drills (Ref. no. 18214)

There are seven in all sold as tapping drills for 2BA down to 10BA.

I used the 1.8mm for the valve rod guide on the steam chest on my Stuart S50

Price for the set is £6.95 inc. vat (free p&p)

Wolfie, if its a standard size, you can turn the end of a 13" piece of silver steel to match the angle on the end of a drill. File/mill the end to make a thinner flat blade about as long as the diameter, then file on two cutting edges. Harden and temper (only the end needs to be hard enough to cut). This will work for holes as long as you dont force it and clear it often.

If you do a bit more work the ideal is a spade drill – choose a rod about 30-25% narrower than the hole needed heat the end of the rod to red heat and flatten it out to make a broader end, but don't quench. Turn it to the required width. Now form the cutting edges on the end. Harden and temper.

This is the way nearly all drills were made and I have a few very small professionally made spade drills.

                                    Hi KWIL,

I will try again. I am using FF 10.0.2 with Win 7 64 bit SP

                                    TEST

It was my mistake. I thought I needed to select "Link to anchor in text" Without selecting that I think it will work.

                                    Yes it now works. Thanks.

                                    Les.
