Welcome ! I’m to far away but there may be others nearer who may be able to at least show you the basics of whar’s what. Join a local ME club, there’s one at Exeter and may be others not to far. Good Luck. Noel.

Condition is everything, but the Boxford is likely the better lathe.

I’m not a ‘proper’ machinist and don’t live anywhere near.  However, happy to help when I come down to Chulmleigh later this month or early next.

What make/model is the mill? Together, they are likely an ideal combination for lots of jobs/projects/etc.

            Hi

Search out Evan Lewis on Youtube for info on the Boxford, he has some good instructional videos on what does what.

I’m too far away, but also have a Boxford and an ML7, but as yet no mill – something has to go first, no room to spare!

If you can get along to St Katherine’s Priory in Exeter (Stoke Hill next to Morrisons) this Sunday 7th you can meet up with EDMES and discuss things. https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/topic/exeter-district-model-engineers-show-7-sept/

You should also look at both lathes’ entries on Lathes.co.uk to identify parts.

Buy a copy of LH Sparey’s book The Amateur’s Lathe for learning how to use these old lathes.

Also, both Myford and Boxford user manuals are available for free download if you search online.

Did you know that there is a model engineering society in Kingsteignton? It’s the Newton Abbot society – NADMES – and you are more than welcome to get in touch and come and visit us. We are a pretty friendly bunch! PM me via this forum or email [email protected] and I can give you details.

                  – Brian (NADMES chairman)

Good starter for new lathes too, other than it was written before carbide inserts and DROs etc.   An easy read that covers all the basics. Readily available, not just from Amazon, usually under a tenner.   Others recommend this South Bend book , free download.

Sparey got me started with no need to join a club, though a mentor would have saved me a lot of faffing about!  Sadly my local clubs are all difficult to reach because there are no direct roads.  I need to move house!
