I've just seen a used PP Thornton escape wheel cutter sell for £71 inc. postage.

The Thornton list price is £58 + VAT. Which route would you rather take?

It probably doesn’t really matter to anyone except fizzy [who should be either peeved or honoured … I’m not sure which]

Gobsmacked is what I am. No one is having a problem with the sale, it just bewilders me why anyone would pay so much for a second hand boiler when a very simple google would allow you to see that it only cost £599 new. Its a strange world! Im in the middle of building ten of these, if I put my price up in line with ebay I would either be a lot better off or stuck with ten boilers no one wanted to buy. Think I will leave them as they are (theyre all sold…but the next lot ofr ten arent).

Do remember that if it went for 750, after epay’s and paypal’s charges, the vendor would only see 650.

If it went for 995, the vendor would net 860. A difference of 210 quid on that money is considerable.

I've never sold anything on eBay but from what I see the charges at traditional auctions are not much differerent, watching Paul Martins 'Flog it' programme he always warns about the standard charges which seem to vary from about 15% to 18% plus 20% VAT.

I always wait until Ebay are offering a "Max £1 selling fees" promotion before listing anything that is going to sell for more than £50. I do OK on Ebay, I've bought a job lot of test equipment items for 99p buy it know (collection only) and sold 1 item from it back on Ebay for £1500. Seller also let me pick his skip, an item from there went to a dealer for £750, the listed on their site for 4 times that . The seller was closing down and had bee quoted a few hundred pounds for clearing his "hazardous" waste electrical equipment so was glad to get rid. I did OK , I've no problem with the dealer making a profit, he had to calibrate the item and provide a warranty and has premises and employees to pay for.

What annoys me is the people selling dangerous new goods or items that they know are not working properly. That works both ways, computer sellers in particular have trouble with buyers who have an identical faulty item, buy a working one, swap the faulty part and claim the one they bought was faulty.

my local auction-house-charges + VAT add 50% to the hammer price, most of their material is stock clearance, lost property or amazon returns (often these are obviously damaged by some recipient) – often I see things go for more than the retail price once this +50% is added but there are ‘bargains’ in the ‘unconsidered trifles’ but never had a 99p to ?1500 hike – part of my remnant conscience keeps suggesting such is a form of theft on the ignorant. Many at the auctions are professional ebay, market stall or car-boot sellers and know when to stop to allow them to make a reasonable profit.

Just to be clear, I didn't mark the item (a Schaffner System 2050 EMC Impuse generator) up to £1500, I listed it as an auction starting at £50. The market set the price and the buyer (a business) was very happy at £1500 for a ystem that cost over £50,000 new. They even paid for my time, fuel and hotel to personally drive it to Scotland.
I don't make money on everything, but overall my hobby is self financing.

I did get scammed as a buyer many years ago (pre PayPal) over a £500 Tektronix portable 'scope. Buyer looked genuine, had a website etc. I won the auction an sent off a check. Check cleared but no 'scope. further enquires found the address was a "corner shop" informal po box. It was a deliberae scam, specifically targeting test equipment. The police were involved but the supposed fraudster had "spent" the money and had no assets. They added to their criminal record and got a minimal penalty. No one got any money back.
People complain about PayPal fees, but they provide a safe transfer service for buyer and seller.

Hi, strange when you look at the item location of the machine vice and the exclusions to where it will be posted too. I suppose you could always remove it from it's repair plate, trim the rough parts back and then use it as a two part milling vice for long parts lengthways on your mill table. As far as people paying stupid money for things that you can get cheaper, I used to go to one live auction quite frequently some years ago and there used to often be power tools that where exclusive to B&Q DIY starting at a very low price, but where obviously customer returns and or with some of the standard accessories missing, but some people would bid relentlessly against each other and end up paying much more than they would if they went and bought a brand new one from the store, and that happen quite often, they must have just got a buzz from winning I guess.

                                                    Regards Nick.
