I have a requirement for some 2.5mm Hex headed, stainless steel  ‘full’ nuts for a model I am building but I am finding it difficult to obtain anything other than what could be classified as typical electronic instrument grade nuts which being ‘thin’ simply do not look right on a model.

To get around this I have turned up a batch of nuts from s/s hex stock sharing the external dimensions of a 7BA nut which certainly look far better when mounted on the model.

Even when specifically requesting so called ‘Full’ 2.5m s/s nuts from one of our UK modelling suppliers and being told that they were available, I was still sent the inferior looking instrument style variety.

Why is it so difficult to buy ‘full’ metric s/s nuts in these sizes in this country?

Polly may have some in stock but they seem a bit low recently.

I get mine direct from Germany from either GHW or knupfer both these are smaller than ISO hex size and taller as well as being fully machined not forged like the common M2.5 nuts.

Typing “M2.5 full nuts” into Ebay search brings up quite a few hits, mainly stainless. Images seem to show they’re OK.

I do not have any M2.5 nuts but my M3 stainless steel full nuts are 2.3mm thick and my M3 thin nuts are 1.8mm thick. At larger sizes, the tickness of full nuts is close to 75% of the thread size and the thickness of thin nuts is close to 50% of the thread size. My nuts were purchased from Kayfast (website or eBay).

Hello Jason. Could I perhaps ask you to post a link to one of your preferred German suppliers indicating where  2.5mm s/s ‘full’ nuts can be found in their on-line catalogue as I have not had much luck searching for them in the past.

I did contact Polly some 3 months or so ago re 2.5mm full s/s nuts but was told that none was available and they would not be putting in a new order from their german suppliers until sometime later in the year.

Click either of the two suppliers’ names in blue in my first reply and it will take you straight to stainless nuts

If you scale down a 1.5″ bsw nut (pre war standard) by factor 12 it is 0.2″ af and 1/8″ thread. These are near enough 5mm and 3mm. Many years ago I bought some ‘reduced size’ m3 nuts from Polly, and I’ve never used them because they are only 4mm af and just look wrong, to my mind worse than the normal 5.5mm af. I do agree that commercial nuts ard too thin. I dont know what af Jasons source is

Same as the Polly ones I think, they are ‘one size smaller’ – depends what you want them for, if you need to fit them in a spot-face on a bearing cap or at cylinder head & base, ‘driver-room’ becomes an issue and the proportions aren’t that dissimilar to some full-size automotive nuts..

I do take your point tho’, there’s room for something in the middle, I’ve made my own before now.

Lable in the background of my photo shows the size for M2.5, SW is the AF @ 3.5mm and Hohe the height at 2.3mm. Sometimes they can look a bit small on the AF when viewed on their own but seem fine on a completed model. I suspect their sizes are derived from available metric stock and the price would be prohibitive if they were milled for round which I have done in the past particularly for square heads and filister head screws.

I have been using them for at least 9 years now, you have all seen my models and I’ve never had any comments that I’ve got small nuts so I guess they look right and win awards.

Maybe could have made it clearer in my post that I like ’em, buy mine from GHW..

I have used ACCU in the past. They do a range of M2.5 nuts.
