I need to replace the FC250J/230v motor control board on my CL300 but Clarkes' now want some £160 for a replacement. The latest version is the XMT2335 available from ArcEuro is only £80 post paid. I notice that the latest machine has some overload protection so I pesume the XMT 2335 provides that. Assuming all other connections are the same has anyone details of the overload connections and the warning light (LED?)

      Would appreciate any info/comments.

Easier than getting the spindle out and the bearing off the chuck end but still not easy. I cut a bit of 1/2×1" to bear against the back of teh bearing shell, drilled the middle for M12 clearance and then used another bar against the outside of the head casting and then would it out with a M12 stud down the middle, still needed a lot of effort.

Anyone thinking of changing the bearings on one of these type of lathes would do well to have a look at this article on Arc Euro's site, there is a sketch of how to make up a puller to get the spindle out

          Hi folks,

I'm picking this thread up again as my X3 is due to be delivered by Axminster soon, some months after ordering on 12th night (Epiphany, 6th January)! I new it would be a long wait, but I wasn't expecting it until the end of April so this is a pleasant surprise!

Martin W had some good words to say about the 2 Soba milling vices. Which were they?

Similarly for Paul with his screwless vice from Arc Euro, how successful has it been, I suppose it's the one that DavidC has found successful?

Any other current milling vice thoughts are welcome.

          Thanks

          Dave

            Geoff,

Thank you for your reply. I may be taking a trip to Warco sson, so it would be good to see a what the DH-6 is like in the flesh as it were.

            Paul,

Thank you for your comments on the Arc Euro vices, I was wondering about the mounting provisions, your "dogs" seem to be a good solution.

            Regards

Thsi isn't a reply. it's a similar question. I am impressed by the specification of chester's cobra mill but the wattage of the motor seems to imply that fairly robust cuts on any material would be out of the question. if i'm wrong here then i'd be pleased to buy the cobra. Also about the sieg mills: no other supplier of chinese machine tools that i have noticed gives customers the option of a preparation service. Why doesn't arceuro trade provide after-factory care as part of the price? after all, whan you buy a car you don't expect to have to rebuild it as part of the price, do you? do readers have any comments about amadeal's xj12-300 (sounds like a car!) ? However i do take one contributor's point about spebding as much as you can afford which might be rather like saying you only get what you pay for. thanks

                I bought a second-hand bender similar to "150-010-00200 Universal Bender, http://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Shearing-and-Bending"

Hoping someone could supply a link to a user guide/assembly instructions etc. I looked around the above website but no success.

I have one of Arc Euro Trades precision vices its a very nice and accurate piece of kit and exceptional value for the money. It's a pleasure to use.

The only drawback I found was mounting, as the mounting slots (there are only 2) are at the ends and I wanted to mount my vice at 90 degrees to the table I got around it by making some "dogs" to sit in the side holes.

                  Regards

                    Hi,

After 20 years model engineering, I have only just managed to make room for and buy a small milling machine. The machine in question is a Warco WM14 mill/drill and I am now trying to decide which machine vice to get. I am considering the Vertex VK-4 offered by Rotagrip and one of the “Precision Tool Vices” advertised by Arc Euro Trade. The Vertex has 4” width and the precision vices range from 25mm to 100mm.

As the table of the WM14 is only 400mm x 120mm, the Vertex seems to be a bit massive for such a small machine.

I would be glad to hear what other WM14 owners are using. Also, from owners of the “Precision Tool Vices”.

                    Regards Geoff.

Mine is much like the one posted by Stub Mandrel but instead of a bolt it has a micrometer head fitted so i can face off to fine limits [ I don't run with a top slide fitted, rigidity is worth more to me ]

To this end I persuaded Ketan at ARC to stock just the micrometer heads so anyone can make the same sort of attachment.

                          John,

I have a Sieg Mill which I converted to belt drive, using the original motor – the main reason was to eliminate the risk of the plastic primary drive gear breaking (I broke two), and to reduce noise from the gear .

I found some information about making this kind of mod on an american website, but it drove directly to the main shaft, rather than the intermediate gear shaft. This also required the direction of rotation of the motor to be changed. The author claimed this gave him more than enough power. I tried this, but found it did not give me sufficent power for some purposes, but it did show that the (internal) gear reduction did not contribute a great deal of noise. The toothed pulleys and belt I used for this came from the German company Conrad, who do a fairly wide range of pulleys and belts. I was concerned about the power transmission capability, but practical experience has shown this was unfounded.

My mod was very simple, and did not require any permanent changes to the machine, which means I can restore the original configuration if necessary. The casting on top of the head which supports the motor was simply removed, and an aluminium plate supported on small spacers used instead. This plate was drilled to accept the motor, and to clear the top of the spindle. The same mounting holes were used as on the original. A small toothed pulley was bored out and fitted to the motor in place of the small primary gear, and a larger pulley fitted on the intermediate drive shaft. I selected pulleys to give me as near as possible the same ratio as the gears but still fit in the space available – there was just sufficient clearance. Some shim washers and counterboring of these pulleys were necessary to get clearances, but nothing difficult – the whole mod took less than one day to make and install. No change of motor direction is required, and the motor is retained in almost the same position as the original, and does not require offsetting to one side to allow a long belt (as I have seen since I did my mod). I also still have the slow/fast gearbox speed selection. The drive ration is not exactly as original, because there was not quite enough space to get a large enough pulley on the spindle, but is slightly higher geared – given that the mill has speed control, I still have more than enough speed range for all I have ever needed.

This has now been in steady use for about five years, and I am still on the same drive belt. (I bought two, because I was worried about it, and still have one in its packing). The machine is quite a lot quieter – I can run it for long periods without annoying myself or anyone else. ITs probably my imagination, but it aslo seems to run much more smoothly, and cuts appear to be smoother – I have't done any real testing for 'improvements' of this kind, as this was not my original concern – I can only say it is at least as good as the original configuration.

I can't remember exact prices, but if I remember correctly, the pulleys and belt cost about 20 Euros at the time (probably more now), The ally mounting plate came from my 'odds and sods' collection, as did half a dozen allen-head bolts to mount it all.

Conrad has a large website, the search facilties are better in German, but the site can be read in English – toothed belts (zahnreimen) and pulleys (zahnschieben) are at:

                          http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/category/SHOP_AREA_32457/Zahnriemen-Keilriemen

Conrad have an excellent mail – order service (no connection – only a very satisfied customer for more than 30 years).

I am sure these pulleys/belts could be obtained in England – maybe HPC gears in Chesterfield

There is some info on these sites:-

                          http://warhammer.mcc.virginia.edu/ty/7×10/vault/Mills/G8689-MiniMill/Projects-Mods/DriveBeltMod/MillBeltMod.html

                          http://www.mini-lathe.com/Mini_mill/Reviews/Belt_drv/belt_drv.htm

There are links on these sites to other mill belt mods (and other mods)

Club inspectors can't inspect stainless as its not covered by the club testing code, see item 3.5

I feel this is one of the reasoins that Stainless is not used much in this counrty, go over to Europe and stainless is quite common, that may be the best place to look for designs.

                              J

Edit, I remember this came upo before, if you look closely at the wording on Maxitrak it says copper and MS boilers but Stainless vestles not boilers, or something like that. Although Marco who does their boilers is quite capable of stainless work as part of their main fabrication company Welding Innovations Ltd.

"In addition to the list below, we can build any boiler to your requirements, Water Container's in Stainless or other materials.  Also, we can build boilers in other materials such as carbon steel."

Eventually I'll follow the Arc Euro guide and replace the spindle bearings, but for this first lathe strip down I'll give it a miss.

I have been reading Arc Euro's very useful "Mini-Lathe Preparation Guide". The Guide shows the various lathe bearings and surfaces that are to be cleaned, oiled and greased with an appropriate lubricant.

The one and only thing that I know about lubrication is that oil will flow, and is taken into rotating bearings by capillary action.

Are there any simple rules as to whether a bearing/surface should be oiled or greased? When are oil and grease suitable alternatives for each other?

                                    Thank you.

                                          Hi Mick,

sorry no, it is a standard nut, which is M40 x 1.5.

the thread on the spin indexer is a finer pitch, but I cant remember what it is.

                                              Hi Ketan,

Thanks for the info on the ER25 size.

It has been asked already – but cannot be seen in the pictures – are the blocks bored through to allow long stock holding?

                                              Thanks,

                                              John

They are drilled through. Not shown in the pictures but the description in the latest Arc Euro catalogue (Issue 7)

John S or Ketan…..just had a look at Arc Euro collet blocks and I notice that the collet nut is available separately. Does this nut have the same thread as the spin indexer? ( I have banjoed mine….don't ask how).

That is just what I'm thinking of doing David since Arc Eurotrade do not have the ER25 size.
