Hi anoddcog here I have just resurrected my workshop and steam models after 40years so a bit of catching up to do. Just waiting to join my local model engineering society again wish me resurrected

The ME world has missed you – probably. Glad you are switched on to your local club as involvement is beneficial to both parties. Care to say which one though I know it can’t be EDMES as we weren’t around 40 years ago but celebrated with 10 candles this year.

Hi folks, I’m Tim. I’ve been involved in engineering all my life (now 72 years).

I enjoy all aspects of mechanical engineering and recently been downsizing which is proving hard especially the workshop area. Being quite competent within the CAD and Parametric design, (In fact I teach at the local college part time). Being a staff member offers me the privilege of having use of their workshops. Nice having sold my big lathes, milling machines, sheet metal facilities, etc. I have got into 3D printing as an outlet for my design ideas and prototypes. Both Resin and FDM, on an engineering prototype basis than the more popular fantasy modeling.

I have just acquired a 2009 Chester mini lathe. I am thinking about customization, (improvements) as I’m planning the refurbishment. This is a table top tool, but big enough to match the capacity of my printers.

The question of the moment is “the specification of the spindle nose”. Once I  strip the headstock I will be able to take it to college and use shadow graph and other inspection equipment, but I’m impatient and wanting to start tracking down multi jaw chucks, collet holders and faceplates, etc.

If anyone out there can give me the heads up, I would be pleased to hear from them.

Nothing too complicated about minilathe spindle noses that requires fancy measuring equipment.

Usually 80mm diameter with a short (approx 3mm long)  55mm dia spigot that is a common recess size for chucks etc so they fit straight on. Fixings on an 66mm PCD

Hi Tim,

It’s not screwed, just a more modern flange fixing as Jason describes. I’d just add they are drilled for three and four M6 fixings, the spigot is normally a close sliding fit, and the spindle is bored MT3. There are versions with larger spindles that take a nominally 4″/200mm chuck.

There are lots of books out there with accessories and ideas (not just my one!)

You will always find help and advice on here, if you feel that you need it.

There is a vast anount of experience on here about all facets of model engineering in all its forms.

The Chester mini lathe is most likely to be made by SIEG, so spares should be available (They are imported in different colour schemes, by Machine Mart, and Axminster etc.

(Similar machines are imorted by WARCO, Amadeal,Sealey and others. but coming from different factories, there will be slight differences. Size of keyway for changewheels etc) but many accessiries/ chucks are interchangeable. You can get smaller accessories from folk like Chronos or RDG.

A friend has a Chester lathe, but got his faceplate from AMADEAL
