At breakfast I have jars of marmalade, Marmite and almond butter. The marmalade lid behaves normally, a twist and I’m in. The Marmite is a bit stiffer. But the almond butter lid practically falls off, hardly possible to tighten for more than a few seconds. Have to be a bit careful picking it up.

I looked at the thread form and pitch – normal for glass jars and I have some of these jars in the workshop for screws etc. Their lids stay on OK.

So is there some special thread non-locking property of almond butter? Are there other substances that behave like this?

I’ve never had a problem with jam jars but putting the lid back on a biscuit tin full of chocolate digestives is nigh impossible.

Marmalade, marmite and almond butter on toast sounds disgusting 🙂

Eat crunchy peanut butter like a normal person. Costco large jars make good screw containers afterwards and the Costco Marmite tubs have nice flexible lids which seal well for airtight storing.

On the subject of screw threads have you noticed that the lids of some ketchup & golden syrup ‘store upside down’ are interchangeable with (UK) milk bottles. This can be useful if you want a larger capacity squirty water / coolant container or a proper top for the HP sauce (though it doesn’t restore the proper taste of HP sauce).

Marmite and peanut butter go well but can’t bring myself to try the ‘peanut butter and jelly’ combination from over the pond.

The wretched thing is getting better at dealing with paradox and its own errors, and gets ever more more human-like: it weasels its way out of the situation, like a politician, but avoids properly addressing the subject head-on. Notice how it has effectively shifted the blame for the apparent paradox to the questioner, and put words into my mouth? (I still find it mighty impressive, and useful, but it can’t be trusted.)

A variation that I encountered was last Saturday when I checked the car before a 180 round trip on Sunday. The nearside metal tyre valve caps unscrewed as expected but the rear drivers side was too stiff for my arthritic fingers and I used an adjustable spanner on the hex bodied cap. There was a white/yellow powder on the threads. The front one was so tight that the whole valve rotated and leaked air. Luckily I had a couple of spare wheels in the garage or the trip would have had to been cancelled. The local garage told me that supergluing or Loctiting valve caps was not that uncommon and charged me £10 for replacing the valve. I have put silicone grease on the tyre valve cap threads now.

On the subject of slipperyness, icy surfaces have low friction because the surface layer melts with pressure, but below -40 degrees the layer is too cold to melt and ice is no longer slippery.

That’s because it doesn’t actually know anything except how words go together. All it does is generate an agreeable answer that looks right.

AI: glorified search engines that are reasonably good at parsing a sentence. Also sometimes hallucinate.

Search engine? In it’s wildest hallucinations maybe. It’s an overpowered spell checker.
